“Energy System 2050“ (ES 2050) is a joint initiative of the research field “Energy” within the Helmholtz Association. The overall goal is to develop tangible and exploitable knowledge and technological solutions on system level, which can be pursued by politics and economy to support the “Energiewende”.

The German energy transition (“Energiewende”) is an ambitious and comprehensive project reaching out far into the future, which requires a flexible re-design of the energy systems until 2050.

In this context, ES 2050 analyses the integration of key technology elements into the energy system and develops solutions for successful integration of volatile renewable energy resources into the German and European energy supply system.

Five research topics address the fundamental challenges of the energy transition:

  1. Storage and Grids
  2. Biogenic energy sources
  3. Energy and raw materials based on hydrogen
  4. Lifecycle-oriented sustainability analysis on system level
  5. Toolbox with Databases

Through an interdisciplinary approach involving several research centers, ES 2050 system level research is performed in a holistic way.

In a partnership with KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) and JARA (Jülich Aachen Research Alliance), the two institutes Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate (EBC, Prof. D. Müller) and Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS, Prof. A. Monti) of the E.ON Energy Research Center actively contribute to research topic five, “Toolbox with Databases”, which includes for instance the development of an open source platform for monitoring and data analysis of energy systems under the responsibility of ACS.

The research targets the definition of a platform architecture that supports modularity and compatibility with established standards, as well as the definition of data models for the integration of heterogeneous actors.
