On 14 May 2019, the JARA-ENERGY Talks took place for the third time. Prof. Christoph M. Schmidt, President of RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and Chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts, spoke to his audience in the Generali Hall of the SuperC of RWTH Aachen University. Prof. Schmidt gave a lecture on the challenges and measures taken to date to implement the energy system transformation as well as global emissions trading and he addressed a uniform CO2 price as possible solution to drive the energy system transformation forward.

Energy Transition, a Global and Interdisciplinary Field

The transition of the energy system is one of the most important, if not the most important, challenges facing society today. Prof. Christoph Schmidt is certain that this challenge can only be mastered by a reorientation of energy and climate policy.

In his talk, Schmidt makes it clear that humans are independent and free individuals, and that the economic view is just as decisive for a successful climate policy as, for example, economic or scientific views. In addition, the increase in CO2 emissions is a global problem and knows no national borders. The economic expert therefore goes one step further and advocates that a successful energy and climate policy should be characterized by an interdisciplinary approach and, above all, a global orientation.

The opportunity to initiate new approaches, Schmidt sums up, is greater than ever before. Inspired by the many young people around the world who are becoming increasingly involved in climate protection, politics is slowly moving. This development makes it possible to implement new solutions.
