Invitation to the Online Workshop: "Integration of Flexibilities into the Energy System and Challenges for the Coordination between Transmission and Distribution System Operators".

The Platone Project presented its nearly four years of activities during its final conference on June 28. The conference was held at the Faculty and included a keynote address by Luis Cunha, Director of European Policies and Projects at E-Redes and Vice Chair of ETIP SNET. The event also included a panel discussion on open source solutions to promote the energy transition. Participants also had the opportunity to learn about the project's Key Exploitable Results (KERs).

The consortium of the German living lab research project TransUrban.NRW held a project meeting on the topic "TransUrban.NRW in implementation – opportunities and challenges".

Maliheh Haghgoo could successfully defend her dissertation about "Semantic Interoperability as a Service for the Smart Energy System".

The International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) is an international platform for experts to develop and share knowledge and expertise on smart and flexible power grids of the future. ISGAN's national experts come from 26 countries and include engineers, scientists, and industry and policy leaders and decision makers. In collaboration with the International Energy Agency (IEA), ISGAN is committed to identifying advanced technologies and operational concepts. Within thematically clustered working groups, international knowledge exchange is promoted and coordination between stakeholders is facilitated. RWTH participates with ACS and IAEW in working group 6 "Power Transmission & Distribution Systems".

Gonca Gürses-Tran could successfully defend her dissertation about "Machine learning techniques for time series forecasting in power systems operation".

Dr. Ilka Jahn has been accepted as a member of the Junges Kolleg of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The Academy, in cooperation with the Humboldtⁿ sustainability initiative, offers young researchers and artists the opportunity for free research and interdisciplinary dialogue. A special focus of the Junge Kollegs from 2023 onwards will be the working group "Sustainability".

Erdem Gümrükcü participated in the 1^st General Assembly of the FLOW project that was co-hosted by the EnelXWay and ARETI in Rome.

The ACS invites you to the ACS Student Event. Research projects, open HiWi positions and theses of the institute will be presented. This year the event will take place again in presence on January 23, 2023 from 15:30 at the E.ON Energy Research Center, Mathieustr. 10 room 24.

A software paper introducing datafev framework has been published in Elsevier Software Impacts. datafev is an open-source Python framework for developing and testing management strategies for electric vehicle  charging. This framework will be used in WP4 of the FLOW project.

A research article titled 'Hybrid Dynamic Phasor Modeling Approaches for Accurate Closed-Loop Simulation of Power Converters' has been published in 'IEEE Access' journal. It is an open access paper downloadable from the following link.

2022 Transformation Readiness Study

Anica Frehn could successfully defend her dissertation about "Under voltage ride through tests on nacelle test benches equippedwith a power hardware in the loop setup".

Dr. Ilka Jahn, as one of seven New Generation Network members, has received the "NGN Award 2022" for outstanding contributions of young members to CIGRE activities. Dr. Jahn is secretary of CIGRE working group B4.85 (Interoperability in HVDC systems based on partially open-source software). To the right Michel Augonnet, CIGRE President.

Erdem Gümrükcü represented ACS in the kickoff meeting of the FLOW project that was hosted by the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) in Barcelona.

The E.ON Energy Research Center is supporting the Archimedes Sandbox this year. The participating children, were already at the E.ON ERC and could get an insight into the research. On 7.7. a wind farm model will also be presented for all interested parties as part of the FutureLab.

On 16-17 June, the final event of the H2020 project CoordiNet took place. Gonca Gürses-Tran participated in the hybrid event which attracted audience from research, industry and regulatory in Brussels.

The project coordination led by ENEL announced: “The coming CoordiNet Roadmap will show how flexibility may become more economically efficient for occasional congestion management than reinforcing the grid”.

Prof. Antonello Monti was awarded the 2022 Innovation Award of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for his research on the IoT platform SOGNO (Service Oriented Grid for the Network of the Future). The SOGNO software platform provides distribution grid operators with improved control, through which better usability and optimization of energy sources are to be achieved. 

Innovation Minister Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart emphasized: "Business and society have set themselves ambitious goals: By 2045, we want to have a climate-neutral economy in North Rhine-Westphalia. To ensure that this transformation succeeds, we are shifting towards a more sustainable energy supply based on renewables. This poses huge challenges for electricity distribution networks. Prof. Monti and his team have developed a platform to make better use of the capacities of existing grids thus supporting the expansion of renewables. Such innovative solutions can facilitate Germany's energy transition and boost acceptance among citizens."

Sriram Karthik Gurumurthy represented ACS in the TWINECS project meeting held in Barcelona, Spain on the 16^th and 17^th of May 2022. The meeting was hosted by UPC. The current status of the project and next steps towards Multi-physics simulations were discussed.

The OneNet General Assembly in 2022, took place on 12-13.05 in a hybrid model and was hosted by ACS in E.ON ERC, Aachen. Maliheh Haghgoo, Sonja Happ, and Iveliva Stoyanova represented ACS at the meeting. The topic of the meeting was heavily focused on the implementation of each demonstration.

Chief Engineer Bettina Schäfer was one of 7 RWTH executives to receive the "FAMOS for Family" award for family-friendly management style. In 2017, Prof. Antonello Monti had already received the award.

The consortium of the ectoControl 2.0 research project held a project meeting in Malmö from 05.04.2022 - 08.04.2022, which included a local pilot site visit of the research performed during the project.
Project ectoControl 2.0 is based on the partnership agreement between RWTH Aachen University and E.ON.
It researches modern control algorithms for bi-directional low-temperature district heating and cooling grids.
Based on the ectogrid™ pilot system "Medicon Village" in the southern Swedish city of Lund, ACS and E.ON are jointly developing holistic optimization methods as well as sector-coupled operation and control strategies for such low-temperature grids.

At the ACS student event, the research of the institute, HiWi jobs and theses offerings are presented. It takes place on 25th January 2022 from 11:00 to 12:30 via Zoom.

CoordiNet held its General Assembly on January 14 2022 online. The focus of the discussion was put on the management of tasks in WP6: Markets design and platform, lessons learned. In a next step with a final data collection ex-post evaluation of the demonstrations are conducted by means of KPI analyses to which ACS is contributing. Finally, ACS support to identify a roadmap towards a new market design including the implementation standardized products for grid services. This roadmap will be a result of project analyses, stakeholder interviews and the learning of the CoordiNet demonstrations. Furthermore, Gender Balance and Diversity is an important topic for the CoordiNet consortium. For this, in 2021, ENEL has organized a Diversity Management Conference.

An article on "Optimal Management for Megawatt Level Electric Vehicle Charging Stations with a Grid Interface Based on Modular Multilevel Converter" has been published in "IEEE Access". The article is available for open access.

On Monday, December 20th 2021 at 11:00 the public presentation of the dissertation of Abhinav Sadu with the title "Towards resilient design of distribution grid automation and intended failures" will take place via Zoom. Afterwards, he will defend his dissertation.

The paper "Experimental measurement of frequency-dependent component impedances of grid-forming inverters in islanded microgrids", co-authored by Prof. Antonello Monti and Sriram Gurumurthy received the Best Paper Award of the IEEE PES ISGT-Europe 2021 conference.

In October 2021, Clara Köhnen (IAEW at RWTH Aachen University) and Gonca Gürses-Tran (ACS) were appointed to national experts representing Germany in ISGAN Annex 6: Power Transmission & Distribution Systems. On 09.11.2021, the RWTH project plan to bring the ISGAN Annex 6 into exchange with national TSO-VNB projects and to highlight common challenges and opportunities was presented. Through regular meetings with the task force, the perspective from Germany is brought into the current work program of the iea and thus into the exchange of the committed international experts. 

H2020 project I-NERGY released an open call. The open call addresses SMEs and startups developing artificial  intelligence algorithms and services applicable to the energy sector. Applicants can receive 50.000€ of funding under this programme.

BD4NRG held its second plenary meeting on 26th and 27th October. The two-day assembly was held entirely online, with all 35 project partners attending. The first day, focusing on the 12 Large-Scale Pilots, saw them presenting their use cases as well as their status going into the coming pre-pilot phase. On day 2, the BD4NRG Reference Architecture developed by ACS-led Work Package 2 was presented, followed by discussions on progress and next steps for the technical Work Packages 3, 4 and 5 in particular.

IEEE SmartGridComm 2021 will be hosted by ACS at the E.ON Energy Research Center from 25 - 28 October 2021. This year it will be held in a hybrid format, so guests can join the event in person or virtually.

An article on „Optimal load management strategy for large electric vehicle charging stations with undersized charger clusters” has been published in “IET Electrical Systems in Transportation”. This work is the main output of the joint research conducted by SINTEF Energy Research and ACS under MoMeWEC project. The article is available for open access at the link.

Dr. rer. nat. Stefan Lankes (ACS) and Dr. rer. nat. Sebastian Staacks (2nd Institute of Physics A) were awarded with the RWTH Lecturer 2021 certificate. The honor will take place on 18.11.2021 at the digitally conducted "Talk Lehre".

The 1st Periodic Report was accepted by the EC and the result of the 1st Periodic Review is that the project implementation is satisfactory.

Prof. Laith Shalalfeh, of the German Jordanian University in Amman (Jordan) has been welcomed at ACS by Prof. Ponci and Mrs. Nouti. Prof. Shalalfeh will spend a two month period in Aachen working with ACS colleagues on the project “Frequency dynamics of low inertia power grid”, sponsored by DFG Grant to Support the Initiation of International Collaboration N. PO 1710/3-1. The whole team is looking forward to the technical, academic and cultural exchanges that this long awaited visit will bring.

Stefan Dähling has now successfully defended his dissertation "Cloud-based Multi-Agent Systems for Flexibility Management in Future Distribution Grids" before the examiners Prof. Antonello Monti and Prof. Dr. Andrea Benigni (FZ Jülich).

Erdem Gümrükcü gave a presentation on „Energy Management for Large Electric Vehicle Charging Stations” in Aachener Fachsymposium Straßenwesen 2021 - "Smart Infrastucture". The symposium is organized by the research association SETAC, which promotes and conducts the scientific exchange of ideas in the fields of road planning and design, earthworks and road construction, road operation and traffic engineering (traffic and operation), and tunnel construction and operation. As part of the MEISTER project, the publication "Power Quality Improvement in Distribution Grids via Real-Time Smart Exploitation of Electric Vehicles" was published, which can be found at the link.

Under the framework of the EU Horizon 2020 “MEISTER” project, ACS and the project partners (E.ON, Netze Schleswig Holstein AG, and CERTH) created a real-time monitoring infrastructure to capture the states of electric vehicle chargers; and accordingly managed the available electric vehicles as a potential source of energy in the need of one or more flexibility services demanded by the low voltage distribution system operator. In this regard, some results regarding the smart exploitation of the electric vehicles for power quality improvement of the distribution system (in terms of system voltage support, bidirectional power flow management, harmonic alleviation and power factor control) are found at the link.

Under the leadership of areti, Platone has since April 2020 led the BRIDGE Action 7 to provide an update to the next Harmonised Electricity Market Role Model.

On Friday, June 25, 2021 at 09:00 the public presentation of the dissertation "Cloud-based Multi-Agent Systems for Flexibility Management in Future Distribution Grids" by Stefan Dähling will take place. This will be held via Zoom.

Ting Wang could successfully defend his dissertation about "Fault Detection and Isolation in DC Distribution Grids".

ACS colleague Gonca Gürses-Tran moderated a workshop on AI applications in energy system operation. The organization was co-hosted with TU Berlin. The 2-hour workshop started off with impulse presentations from TSOs and DSOs activities and challenges in the context AI for Energy. It was followed by an interactive design-thinking workshop with over 60 participants to identify issues and new ideas in this business.

Prof. Ponci shares her professional story in Electrical Engineering for the initiative of her Alma Mater Politecnico di Milano for the International Women’s Day. The YouTube video can be found at the Link.

In addition to the seminars "Automation of Complex Power Systems", the new laboratory "Implementation of Automation Functions for Monitoring and Control" by Prof. Ponci will be offered in the summer semester. ACS has been serving as Technical Manager of the H2020 project SOGNO from 2018 to 2020. In the framework of this project, a new architecture for service-oriented network automation has been developed and tested in real grids in 3 different test sites. The results of the project influenced further research projects such as the H2020 Platone, coordinated by Prof. Monti, where the platform is further developed and tested in 3 field tests in Germany, Greece and Italy. At the same time the ACS group thought it made sense to create the conditions for a long term sustainability of the project. For this reason, Prof. Monti together with Dr. Mirz, proposed the SOGNO architecture as project in the Linux Foundation Energy. The Foundation recently accepted the project making the work of ACS a candidate to become a de-facto worldwide standard.

This success got the attention of the press as shown by a recent paper in Forbes mentioning the research in ACS as key innovation for the grid of the future.

Dr. rer. nat. Stefan Lankes, Academic Director of the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems, was awarded with the title “RWTH Lecturer” in 2021. The title of RWTH Lecturer is an honor for distinguished researchers from the group of non-professorial academic staff who stand out for their extraordinary teaching and research activities.

Stefan Dähling and Sonja Happ won the best paper award in the IET Cyber-Physical Systems: Theory & Applications for their work "Swarm-based automation of electrical power distribution and transmission system support".

Asimenia Korompili and Prof. Antonello Monti published a paper on "Active Disturbance Rejection Control for DC/DC Converters in MTDC Systems" in IEEE COMPEL 2020 virtual conference. The work was funded by the BMBF project FEN DC-Sek. Asimenia attended the conference and she presented the paper.

Trung Tran Thai successfully defended his dissertation "Advanced Hierarchical Control Structure for VOC-based DG in Multi-bus Microgrid under different grid dynamics and disturbances". Prof. Antonello Monti and Dr.-Ing. David Raisz were his referees.

A Platone advisory meeting took place on 05.11.2020.

The kick-off meeting of project HYPERRIDE (Hybrid Provision of Energy based on Reliability and Resiliency by Integration of Dc Equipment) has been held on 22nd - 23rd October, 2020. The project is funded by the H2020 programme and its duration is four years. The ACS Institute will concentrate its work in the development of automation services for the hybrid AC/DC grid and the implementation of metering devices specifically dedicated to DC technology.

The concluding digital event of the FISMEP project will be held on 19th November. The main results will be highlighted and field experts will discuss the future wide implementation of innovative platforms for smart energy. Additional information and registration at the link.

Asimenia Korompili and Prof. Antonello Monti published a paper on "Active Disturbance Rejection Controller with Virtual Impedance-based Current Limiter for Voltage Regulation of DC/DC Converters" in IEEE eGrid 2020 virtual conference. The work was funded by the BMBF project FEN DC-Sek. Asimenia attended the conference and she presented the paper. Furthermore Erdem Gümrükcü, Prof. Ponci and Prof. Monti published a paper "V2G Potential Estimation and Optimal Discharge Scheduling for MMC-based Charging Stations" in IEEE eGrid 2020. Funded by BMBF project MoMeWEC, Erdem attended and presented the paper.

Asimenia Korompili and Ting Wang presented a tutorial on "Control and Protection for Multi-Terminal DC Distribution Grids" during the IEEE eGrid 2020. The tutorial had three parts: 1. Converter-Level Control: Active Disturbance Rejection Control for Voltage Regulation in DC/DC Converters (presenter: Asimenia Korompili) 2. System-Level Control: Distributed Optimal Power Flow Algorithm for MTDC Distribution Grids (presenter: Asimenia Korompili) 3. Challenges and Methods for Fault Diagnosis in MTDC Systems (presenter: Ting Wang). The work presented in the tutorial was funded by the BMBF projects of FEN.

The OneNet project (One Electrical Network Infrastructure for Europe) started on October 1, 2020, and the official kick-off meeting was held on October 29, 2020, with around 70 project partners. The project is funded by the EU and runs for three years until September 30, 2023.

Trung Tran Thai will present his dissertation "Advanced hierarchical control structure for VOC-based Distributed Generation in multi-bus microgrid under different grid dynamics and disturbances" on November 6, 2020 at 09:00. The presentation is open to the public, but prior registration with Gaurav Roy is required.

Jens Sdun, former Bachelor student at ACS, submitted a paper about his Bachelor thesis to the Power and Energy Student Summit 2020 and won the best poster award.

On 14.10.2020, the entire consortium gathered virtually for a full day event to update the current status of all work packages and take a closer look at the upcoming tasks and the next steps to be taken.

Prof. Antonello Monti received three awards by IEEE. He is awarded "For recognition as the Most Published Author in the Past 7 Years from Germany", "For recognition as a Top 70 Most Published Author of All Time", and "For recognition as a Top 70 Most Published Author in the Past 7 Years".

The MATRYCS project (Modular Big Data Applications for Holstic Energy Services in Buildings) started on October 1, 2020. The project is funded by the EU and runs for three years until September 30, 2023.

Gonca Gürses-Tran, Prof. Antonello Monti, and project partners from VITO/Energyville and University of Comillas published a paper on "Business use case development for TSO-DSO interoperable platforms in large-scale demonstrations". Gonca presented the work at the CIRED 2020 Workshop online.

Erdem Gümrükcü, Prof. Ponci and Prof. Monti published a paper on “Optimized Allocation of Loads in MMC-based Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure”. Erdem attended the virtual conference and presented the paper.

On 14-15 September 2020, the third plenary meeting took place remotely. Charukeshi Joglekar presented the results of the threat modeling and the unknown threats analysis related to the five large scale pilots. Moreover, Hendrik Flamme presented the development progress of the situation awareness and incident mitigation modules to the PHOENIX consortium.

Sonja Happ sucessfully defended her disseration today. Due to Covid restrictions a video conference was held. The title of her dissertation is "A Scalable Simulation Method for Cyber-Physical Power Systems".

Gonca Gürses-Tran, Hendrik Flamme and Prof. Antonello Monti published the paper on "Probabilistic Load Forecasting For Day-Ahead Congestion Mitigation". The work was presented at the 16th International Conference on Probabilistic Methods Applied to Power Systems (PMAPS) on August 20, 2020.

This year Dr. Stefan Lankes organizes the autumn meeting of the Operating Systems Group of the German Informatics Society. It is entitled "From safe languages to safe systems" and will take place on September 24-25, 2020 at the E.ON Energy Research Center. Further information can be found under the link.

Lisette Cupelli successfully defended her dissertation "Datengesteuerte Methoden zur Spannungsregelung in Verteilnetzen: Ein Bottom-Up-Ansatz". Second referee was Prof. Dr. Veit Hagenmeier from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Markus Mirz successfully defended his dissertation "A Dynamic Phasor Real-Time Simulation Based Digital Twin for Power Systems".

The ERIGrid project offers experts free access to leading smart grid laboratories. ERIGrid 2.0 begun in April 2020 and expands the research services and tools of the research infrastructure of the ERIGrid-1 project for validating smart energy networks with an electric backbone. More information about the project can be found under the link.

On 4th June 2020, Santiago Otero (ENEL) and Carlos Madina (Tecnalia) presented the status of the H2020 CoordiNet project during an online session for energy flexibility. Subsequent to the presentations and discussions of the E.DSO flexibility experts, Gonca Gürses-Tran introduced the H2020 project OneNet, which will kick-off in autumn 2020. OneNet follows three innovation concepts:
- Integrated market place for system services
- Moving from system-centric to consumer-centric approach
- Integrated and interoperable data and platform architechture.

Ivelina Stoyanova successfully defended her dissertation "Cooperative Energy Management and Cross-Domaion Optimization for Electro-Thermal Devices at City-District and City-Level". Second referee was Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dirk Müller (EBC).

Lukas Razik successfully defended his dissertation "High-Performance Computing Methods in Power System Simulation". Second referee was Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andrea Benigni (Forschungszentrum Jülich).

The first "Massive Open Online Courses" (MOOCs), which were developed within the ASSET project, are now available. The ACS offers the course "Challenges and Solutions in Future Power Networks", which is held by Gianluca Lipari.

On May 1^st, 2020, the second living lab for the energy transition started under the title "TransUrban.NRW". The institute ACS is also involved in the project. More information can be read at the link.

Dr. Marco Pau and Prof. Monti presented results and demos of the SOGNO project at the Stakeholder Consultation Event "Integrated Approach in the Management and Operation of Electricity Transmission and Distribution Networks" organized by CRE. The event was attended by more than 150 participants coming from academia, industry and associations all over Europe and it touched the topics of digitalization, integration of renewable energy, regulation and standardization in future smart grids.

Prof. Monti received a grant of 30 Million Euro from the European Commission to coordinate a large consortium aimed at defining the structure of the data platforms for energy in Europe. This is the first large international project of the new Fraunhofer Center Digital Energy was officially opened today in a ceremony in Hüttenstraße together with the NRW government and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Prof. Monti was selected by the European Commission as chair of a new task force defining research and innovation priorities in energy area for Europe.

Due to the current situation in Germany, ARCS 2020 and all workshops unfortunately have to be cancelled. The submissions will be published as planned.

Alberto Dognini and Edoardo De Din represented ACS at "Navigating IoT Architectures and Standards Days"​ in Brussels. As part of OPEN DEI project​, ACS supported the organization of the workshop; moreover, the achievements of CoordiNet and PlatOne projects have been presented.

Dr. Marco Pau and Prof. Monti represented ACS during the SOGNO project meeting in Brussels. ACS has a leading role in the project, developing the algorithms and software platform for the field trials and directly hosting one of the pilots in the RWTH Campus grid.

The NRG-5 project had its final review in Brussels on February 13th 2020. The project consortium presented the results achieved during the duration of the research and innovation project. ACS, represented by Manuel Pitz and Gianluca Lipari, demonstrated the concepts and technologies developed during the project, in particular with respect to the system integration and laboratory evaluation.
 

Between January 26th and February 10th, Dr. Gianluca Lipari has been visiting the University of Melbourne at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Dr. Lipari was hosted by the chair of Electrical Power Systems, led by Prof. Pierluigi Mancarella, as part of an ongoing joint cooperation within the two research groups.
Dr. Lipari gave a talk on Next generation ICT tools for active distribution networks, presenting the results and findings from research activities carried out in ACS and within ongoing research projects.

FEIN e.V. invites to a talk by Dr. Tim Schlösser about "AI-based state estimation for full observability of distribution grids", as well as an ask me anything sesstion with GridHound founder Artur Löwen. The event will be on March 3rd. More details can be found at the link.

On 4-5 February 2020, Hendrik Flamme presented the progress and challenges of the work package responsible for the situational awareness and incident mitigation modules at the PHOENIX plenary meeting in Athens.

The first Platone General Assembly took place at the premises of ACEA, the Roman electricity Distribution System Operator.

In the framework of the Exchange DAAD project "Distributed Stochastic OPF Algorithm for System-Level Control of DC Distribution Grids", Dr. Maria Vrakopoulou from the University of Melbourne visited ACS for the kick-off of the project. Dr. Maria Vrakopoulou will collaborate with Asimenia Korompili and Prof. Ponci in this two-year project for the development of distributed stochastic OPF algorithms. During her stay here, Dr. Vrakopoulou gave a lecture on "RES Uncertainty in Power System Operation".​

​Asimenia Korompili attended the Delft DC Summit, where industry and university representatives exchange their experience on DC systems. Asimenia ​​gave a keynote speech on "Control and Automation ​for DC Distribution Grids - FEN Research Grid".

​Dr. Gianluca Lipari attended the first CoordiNet General Assembly in Rome, where the project consortium discussed the evaluation of the work developed by the demonstrators during first year and the project plans for 2020.

The first ​Urban Energy Lab Symposium took place at E.ON Energy Research Center.
Representatives of industry and research exchanged about future urban energy systems through presentations and discussions.

Prof. Ponci and Wilbert Tarnate participated in a lively and productive project meeting with partners, hosted by OTEAcademy in Athens. The tools, methods and materials for the education of people involved in the energy transition are coming along! The partners are looking forward to putting them to work in the upcoming months.
The project meeting was followed by a two-day trainers workshop. It was a great opportunity for partners to take home lots of ideas for creating a great learning environment for adults.

Hendrik Flamme represented ACS at the technical meeting in Terni (Italy) on 17 December, which was hosted by ASM Terni SpA. The topic of the meeting was the identification of vulnerabilities and cyber security threats related to the trial sites.

The first demo site within the Swedish CoordiNet demonstration to launch is the site Skåne by EON Energidistribution in Sweden. This demo will have 5 flexibility providers, with a volume of 60 MW, participating in the first demo, from January 2020.
ACS developed the underlying load forecast for the prediction of the grid state.
The algorithm serves already as a basis for the trading actions in the Day-Ahead market.

EBC and ACS invited their project partners in the BMWi project AGENT to a three-day workshop in Aachen. The participants worked closely together to advance the implementation of the agent platform and the MPC-based control for non-residential buildings.

Alberto Dognini gave a presentation about "Future Functionalities of the Dynamic Grid" at the Smart Grid Forum - Digital Substations 2019 in Berlin, describing the developments and results obtained in the projects FISMEP, SOGNO and NRG-5.

Robert Uhl attended the second German Real-time Simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop workshop at KIT in Karlsruhe, Germany. He presented the status of the institute's work on a novel grid emulator concept, which emulates a measured wideband-frequency grid impedance.

Prof. Ponci has given a keynote speech about Monitoring of the new Power System at the "Fraunhofer Innovation and Networking Days" event in Bonn. "World Cafe" sessions provided a great opportunity for open discussion and networking. The topics covered in all talks and groups also show that in Learning and Education project ASSET is the way to go.

Nikolaus Wirtz represented ACS in the DEFENDER project meeting in Acre (Israel), hosted by Dr. Frucht Systems Limited. In addition to the meeting, several DEFENDER components and the DEFENDER security platform - including a component for simulating potential attack progressions, developed at ACS -  have been demonstrated and evaluated in a local testing area.

Marco Pau and Prof. Monti participated at the SOGNO project meeting in Berlin and at the following innovation event organized by the SOGNO project on the role of 5G for future smart grids and smart cities. The project meeting and the innovation event were hosted by BAUM, one of the partners of the project.​

On October 23, Stephan Gross moderated the session on "Miscellaneous Control Issues" at the IEEE International Conference on Communications, Control, and Computing Technologies for Smart Grids (IEEE SmartGridComm) in Beijing, China. As part of the session, the following publications were presented.

On 22 October, Stephan Gross presented his publication on "Multi-Microgrid Energy Management Systems in Times of 5G" at the IEEE International Conference on Communications, Control, and Computing Technologies for Smart Grids (IEEE SmartGridComm) in Beijing, China.

Milica Bogdanovic, Hendrik Flamme, Sebastian Schwarz and Steffen Vogel have successfully presented their research papers at the 45th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON 2019) in Lisbon (Portugal). The titles of their publications can be found under the weblink below.

Prof. Monti and Bettina Schäfer participated at the kick-off conference of the Revierknoten for Energy and Industry at Raketenstation Hombroich. The Revierknoten are part of the Zukunftskonzept NRW.

The final review of the project RESERVE took place in Brussels.

Gonca Gürses-Tran participated in a workshop on "Needs, challenges and opportunities of TSO-DSO coordination". There she presented the business use cases (IEC 62559-2), identified for the demo sites of the H2020 project, Coordinet. The presenters closed the workshop with a panel discussion.

Platone is a 4 year H2020 project led by ACS. The consortium includes E.DSO, equipment and software manufacturers and DSOs in Italy, Greece and Germany.
Volatile renewable energy sources in combination with less predictable consumption patterns call for higher levels of observability and exploitation of flexibility. While these two challenges are traditionally treated with separate means, Platone proposes an innovative approach to a joint data management for both. Fully respecting the existing regulatory framework, a layered set of platforms will allow to meet the needs of system operators, aggregators and end users. A blockchain based platform is the access layer to generators’ and customers’ flexibilities able to break traditional access barriers by providing certified measures to all the players. In conjunction, certified data and signals will be used for an innovative DSO platform to locally maintain system integrity fostering confidence in flexibility operations. An upper layer will implement a new concept of blockchain-based open market platform to link the local system to the TSO domains and enhance the overall system cost efficiency. Because flexibility means customer involvement, Platone puts the grid users at the centre, investigates their needs and expectations and uses the underlying blockchain to unlock the potentials of higher dynamics of response. The platforms will be tested in 3 large pilots in Europe and analysed in cooperation with a large research initiative in Canada. Thanks to strategic partnerships and a unique consortium structure with an excellent network, Platone can offer an unprecedented effort of dissemination and exploitation with focus on DSO experts and final users.

Prof. Monti, Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran attended the technical meeting on Monday where the consortium defined the next steps to develop further the demonstration campaigns.

On Tuesday, essential results of the first work package have been presented to the advisory board and external stakeholders. Among the other presentations, Gonca summarized the business use cases that have been developed to link harmonized services, products, and market models, with the scope and objectives of the CoordiNet demos.

Hendrik Flamme and Nikolaus Wirtz participated in the kickoff meeting of the project PHOENIX hosted by the project coordinator Capgemini at their new office building "147" in the Paris region. The PHOENIX consortium is comprised of 24 partners from 11 countries, cooperating to increase resilience of the European Electic Power and Energy System (EPES) by protecting it against cyber and privacy incidents and attacks.

PHOENIX is part of the EU's largest research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020. The project will run for three years.

RESERVE developed technical solutions in voltage and frequency control of LV and MV grids to enable up to 100% RES. As well as this, RESERVE made updated and new Network Codes and Ancillary Services. The Network Codes are in the process of standardisation. This event was about bringing the message to political decision makers, based on a set of proposals for citizens' discussion.

Dr. Pau presented two papers on "Impact of Network Parameters Uncertainties on Distribution Grid Power Flow" and on "A Compressive Sensing Approach for Fault Location in Distribution Grid Branches" at the 2nd International Conference on Smart Energy Systems and Technologies (SEST), held in Porto, Portugal.

The kickoff meeting of the project "Blockchain Real Laboratory in the Rhineland Territory" was held today. Representatives of RWTH Aachen University met Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Minister for Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitisation and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, in Düsseldorf.

The kickoff meeting of the project "Blockchain Real Laboratory in the Rhineland Territory" was held today. Representatives of RWTH Aachen University met Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Minister for Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitisation and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, in Düsseldorf.

The trainees Philipp Dreßen and Intan Purnamasari both successfully completed their vocational training to MATSE at the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems. We congratulate them and wish them success for the future.

On August 21 and 22, the project consortium of the N5GEH project met at the E.ON ERC in Aachen to advance the joint platform development. During the two days performance tests were analyzed and the joint software development was homogenized.

Diala Nouti, Gaurav Roy and Sebastian Schwarz represented ACS during the official iELECTRIX kick-off meeting that was hosted by the techical project director E.ON at their premises in Essen. The consortium includes 15 European partners from 9 European Union member states and Tata Power from India with the overall objective of increasing the role of Local Energy Communities (LECs) in speeding up Renewable Energy Sources (RES) integration in power grids.
iELECTRIX is part of the EU's largest research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020. The project will run for three and a half years.

Stefan Dähling participated in the 5-days kickoff sprint of the project AGENT hosted by Bosch at their research campus in Renningen. The project partners discussed goals, methods and interfaces for their cooperation. An initial architecture for the agent-based building automation system was developed. Moreover, a detailed work plan for the next six month was compiled.

Andrea Angioni successfully defended his dissertation "Uncertainty modeling for analysis and design of monitoring systems for dynamic electrical distribution grids".
Dr. Angioni was the first Ph.D. candidate in the teaching and research area of monitoring and distributed control for Powersystems.

With his master thesis "Parallel Optimization in Demand Response Architectures - Challenges, Requirements, Applications" Sebastian Schwarz won the Best Diploma Thesis Award 2019. The price was awarded on the Power Engineering Student Summit in Magdeburg.

Chijioke Eze, Abhinav Sadu, Marija Stevic and Nikolaus Wirtz represented ACS in the DEFENDER project meeting in Brétigny-sur-Orge (France), hosted by Engie SA. In addition to the meeting, several DEFENDER components and the DEFENDER security platform have been demonstrated and evaluated in a local testing area.

ACS participates at the faculty football tournament, which will take place on 12.07. from 10:00 to 15:00.

Marco Pau represented ACS during the SOGNO project meeting in Craiova, Romania. The meeting was hosted by CEZ Romania, one of the DSOs hosting a field trial for the project. More information about the project can be found at the SOGNO website.

Prof. Antonello Monti has been selected by the IEEE Global Public Policy Committee to be part of this committee. It prepares reports and position papers to directly advise the European Parliament in the development of legislation related to Energy.

Dr. Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran joined the meeting for WP1 and WP2 task leaders in Milan. They presented the draft for the finalization of CoordiNet Task 1.5 on business use cases of the demonstration campaigns in Greece, Spain and Sweden.

Robert Ferdinand successfully defended his dissertation "Grid Operation of HVDC-Connected Offshore Wind Farms: Power Quality and Switching Strategies".

Ting Wang has given an oral presentation about his research work in FEN research Project about the protection of DC distribution grids on 04.06 in the conference PEDG 2019 in Xi'an, China.

Dr. Marco Cupelli, Henning Wilms and Gonca Gürses-Tran each presented a poster on their research activities covering advanced control schemes and forecasting techniques with reference to the H2020 INTERFLEX project.

Gonca Gürses-Tran and Hendrik Flamme represented ACS at the IHK Aachen workshop on challenges and opportunities associated with the imminent structural transformation in the Rhenish lignite mining area. In this context, future scenarios were developed and it was discussed how regional research facilities could contribute to realize those scenarios. In particular, the focus of the event was on digitalization and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Pau presented the tool developed in the SOGNO project for the optimal placement of switches in distribution grids at the 1st International Conference on Energy Transition in the Mediterranean Area (SyNERGYMED), held in Cagliari (Italy).

Prof. Ferdinanda Ponci and Wilbert Tarnate represented ACS in ASSET's kickoff meeting. ATOS, the project coordinator, hosted the meeting from May 27 to May 28, 2019, in Madrid, Spain. Around 30 participants from academic and industry partners from 6 European countries are present in the meeting. ASSET aims to establish a sustainable ecosystem for energy transition and education stakeholders. In ASSET, ACS will lead the preparation of learning contents for university programs and MOOCs.​

Robert Uhl attends the biennial workshop on system identification at the ELEC department, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels, Belgium, from 27.5. until 21.6.2019. More information on the workshop can be found at the link.

Bettina Schäfer and Diala Nouti represented ACS during the coordination kick-off meeting that was hosted by the project coordinator Enedis at their premises in Paris. The consortium includes 15 European partners from 9 European Union member states and Tata Power from India with the overall objective of increasing the role of Local Energy Communities (LECs) for speeding up Renewable Energy Sources (RES) integration in power grids. ​​​

Prof. Ponci participates to the Administration Committee meetings of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society in Auckland, New Zealand. An intense week culminating in the full day AdCom meeting, to serve the IMS members at best.

The kickoff meeting of the new BMWi project AGENT was held on 23rd May at the Bosch Research Campus in Renningen. ACS was represented by Igor Sowa and Stefan Dähling. AGENT deals with agent-based energy management systems in nonresidential buildings. Project partners are Robert Bosch GmbH, FAU Erlangen and RWTH Aachen University with the two institutes EBC and ACS.

Prof. Ponci presents the new OS-based low cost PMU and a contactless sensor for domestic power measurement in Auckland, New Zealand at I2MTC 2019, the flagship conference of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society.

The RESERVE Open Day was held at ESB Networks in Dublin, Ireland on 15.05.2019. ESB is running 7 field trials of the voltage control techniques developed in RESERVE to support 100% renewable energy source penetration.  Pictures from the Open Day are at the link. Also, a project meeting was held at UCD in Dublin.

Dr. Pau and Prof. Monti presented the SOGNO and RESERVE project at the InnoGrid conference in Brussels. InnoGrid is a EU event on innovation in electricity networks organised by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) and the European Distribution System Operators for Smart Grids (EDSO), which showcases the most innovative projects at European level in the field of electrical transmission and distribution grids.

Prof. Monti, Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran followed up on the work for load forecasting in the Malmö area. The forecasts will be implented on the future TSO-DSO platform for the project demo in Sweden. 

Since April, Dr. Stefan Lankes is member of the executive committee of the section PARS and the technical committee ARCS of the "Gesellschaft für Informatik".

Together with the colleagues from Systems Software Research Group at Virginia Tech, we develop the unikernel HermiTux, which is binary compatible to Linux and able to run native Linux executables. For a detailed description please read the Hermitux paper, which was presented at 15th ACM SIGPLAN/SIGOPS International Conference on Virtual Execution Environments (VEE’19) and won the best paper award.

A delegation from the University of Melbourne visited the E.ON ERC on 8.4. and toured the laboratories in the main building. In the following Prof. Monti and Prof. Mancarella (UoM) discussed via teleconference with a group of colleagues in Australia about possible future cooperation. In the afternoon of the same day Prof. Mancarella gave a very interesting seminar about the current situation of the energy system in Australia and the challenges related to power systems dynamics with high penetration of renewables.

The 2-day project meeting was hosted by Vattenfall in Stockholm. On the first day, the focus was on the identification of the business use cases (BUCs) based on the IEC 62559 standard. For this, Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran organized an interactive session to share the progress and discuss and develop the current status of the BUCs of the demos in Greece, Spain and Sweden.

Nikolaus Wirtz presented DEFENDER at the fit4sec network meeting in Berlin. fit4sec is a program by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and is aiming to strengthen German security research by providing support in writing proposals and building consortiums targeting EU research programs.

On tuesday, 9th April 2019 at 14:30 (date changed!) the next FEIN e.V. Colloquium will take place in the E.ON ERC in room 00.23. Prof. Pierluigi Mancarella will be a guest speaker and talk about: "Reliability and resilience in low-carbon power systems: challenges and solutions down-under". On March 26th and 27th, the consortium meeting of the ENVELOPE project takes place, where the latest research results are being discussed.

Tim Schlösser successfully defended his disseration "Methodology for Holistic Evaluation of Building Energy Systems Under Dynamic Boundary Conditions".

Prof. Monti, Marco Pau and Jan Dinkelbach represented ACS during the SOGNO review meeting held in Brussels. The SOGNO consortium presented the status of the activities after the first year of work as well as the main innovations proposed within the project.

eSafeNet has studied how to make a secure communications architecture for distributed energy grids. At the final project meeting the work of ACS in developing a method to use locally available distributed energy generation and storage resources to autonomously and automatically recover from blackouts was demonstrated. A second demo concerned the joint work of ACS and Ericsson to develop a method to ensure that the locally available distributed energy generation and storage resources are able to communicate with LTE during the blackout (in the situation where the blackout emergency causes the mobile network operator to reduce access of subscribers to the network in order to ensure continued access of emergency services).

Abhinav Sadu, Marija Stevic and Nikolaus Wirtz represented ACS in the DEFENDER project meeting in Bled (Slovenia), hosted by Jožef Stefan Institute​ and the Institute for Corporate Security Studies.

The ENSURE Cluster 4 workshop was held on 27th February at Nexans in Hannover. ACS was represented by Igor Sowa and Stefan Dähling. Besides the review of the current progress in the cluster "New Technologies", the participants also discussed the planning of the subsequent project phase

The GA of the Association DERlab (in which ACS is member since 2018) was held together with a workshop on 25th and 26th of February at the Enel Green Power Innovation Hub in Catania, Italy. ACS was represented by David Raisz, who gave a short introduction to the Institute's research on 5G technology, used in RESERVE, NRG5 and SOGNO.

In cooperation with Systems Software Reserch Group of the Virginia Tech (USA), the first version of HermiTux was published. A corresponding paper will be presented on the 15th ACM SIGPLAN/SIGOPS International Conference on Virtual Execution Environments.

ACS hosted the Advisory Board Meeting of the SOGNO project. Prof. Monti, Marco Pau and Jan Dinkelbach represented ACS during the meeting.

On Febuary 20th, Jens Breitbart and Stefan Lankes presented on "Parallel 2019", how task and data parallelisation can be realized using the programming language "Rust".

The ENSURE Cluster 3 workshop was held on 19th February at EnergieCampus Nürnberg, together with WP workshops the days before. ACS was represented by David Raisz and Lukas Razik. Besides the review of the current progress in the cluster "System operation Concepts", the participants also discussed the planning of project phase 2, which aims at lab scale / pilot scale implementation.

On 12 to 14 February, the ELSA consortium presented its final results to the EU Commission, represented by Project Officer Dana Dutianu.

Prof. Monti, Dr. Lankes, Maliheh Haghgoo and Alberto Dognini attended the FISMEP project meeting, hosted by ACS.

Nikolaus Wirtz presented the SUCCESS and DEFENDER approaches to Security Operation Center Development and Intrusion Detection Systems at Energy Intrusion Detection 2019 in Amsterdam.

Aysar Musa successfully defended his dissertation "Advanced Control Strategies for Stability Enhancement of Future AC/DC Networks".

Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran represented ACS during the initial kickoff meeting that was hosted by Endesa. The project consortium consists of in total 23 partners from 10 countries with the overall objective to achieve large scale campaigns to demonstrate how TSO-DSO shall act in a coordinated manner to procure grid services in the most reliable and efficient way.

Some of the comments:

It is to be expected that the adoption of new and modified network and grid codes takes longer than the project duration. Moving target. Regulators don't want to implement something that may change in couple of years, so it takes time.

Field trials and economical evaluation are very important. Disseminate through BRIDGE and other ways. Someone must finance the changes proposed. If you say that in 2 years plans will change again, the sponsors will not be happy. So economic evaluation must take this into account. Numbers are needed about the needed capital investment, maintenance upgrade etc.

Even if grid codes are not yet implemented, they have aleady triggered new thinking by regulators and TSOs/DSOs which is a good thing.

Marco Pau and Jan Dinkelbach represented ACS during the SOGNO project meeting in Tallinn, Estonia. The event was hosted by Ericsson Estonia.

On Thursday, January 24th at 10:30 the information event for third semester takes place in the E.ON ERC main building in the rooms 00.23/00.24. All students of the faculty of electrical engineering and information technology are invited. The event is especially aimed at third semester students, who can inform themselves about the specializations in future semesters. The event is held together by institutes ACS and PGS.

Prof. Ponci was selected as a 2018 Outstanding Reviewer of the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement.

Nikolaus Wirtz represented ACS in the DEFENDER project review of the first reporting period in Brussels.

Simon Pickartz successfully defended his disseration "Virtualization as an enabler for dynamic resource allocation in HPC".

On Thursday 29th November, Mr. Steffen Vogel participated at the ceremonial inauguration of the Smart Grid Interoperability Laboratory in Petten, Netherlands. For this event, ACS contributed in collaboration with their colleagues from Politecnico di Turino a small demonstration. Similar to the inauguration of the European Interoperability Centre for Electric Vehicles and Smart Grids in Ispra in the year 2015, we presented our work on geographically distributed real-time simulation by showing the interconnection of the laboratories in Ispra, Petten, Turin and Aachen. For this demonstration the in-house developed platform "VILLASframework" has been used.

As part of the activities of the ​Forum Smart Grid for Smart City (SG4SC) in Genk, Prof. Ponci gives the presentation "The energy pulse of the city" in the Technical Session "Distributed Monitoring and Advanced Measurements in Smart Cities". The session is organized by Dr. Ana-Maria Dumitrescu (Polihnica University of Bucharest). Co-speakers with Prof. Ponci are Prof. Muscas (University of Cagliari) and Prof. Patti (Politecnico di Torino).

​SUCCESS project held its third and final open day, hosted by ESB in Dublin. The event was addressed by ESB CEO and other ESB top executives were present, e.g. the responsible for cyber-security. ESB supported the project's approach to combatting attacks on critical infrastructures and anticipate the need to invest in this area. A highlight was the address of Kevin Foley of the Irish body which co-ordinates fighting cyber-attacks, the National Cyber Security Centre, explaining their work and that they already try to co-ordinate information sharing between actors such as critical infrastructure operators, authorities and firms. SUCCESS is proposing developing an automated system to support this information sharing, and it was the consensus that this is needed.
The SUCCESS final review was held on 29.11, ending the project.

On 28th November, Prof. Ferdinanda Ponci and Steffen Vogel participated at the 2nd IEEE International Forum 'Smart Grids for Smart Cities' in Genk.
They presented their current research activities in two panel sessions.
Prof. Ponci joined the session "Distributed monitoring and advanced measurements in smart cities".
In the session "Living Labs and Hardware test facilities", Mr. Vogel held his presentation "Virtually Interconnected Laboratories for Large Power-System Simulations" which gave an overview of current and past laboratory interconnections used for geographically distributed real-time simulation.

On November 27th, Michael Diekerhof gave the introduction presentation about the “demand for a reference architecture” at the smart energy session of the FIWARE Global Summit in Malaga. He also was part of a panel discussion lead by the European commission to discuss the future role of platforms in the smart energy sector.

Sara Khayyamim successfully defended her dissertation "Centralized-decentralized Energy Management in Railway System".

The DEFENDER project organi​zed a workshop on "Personal data protection in Critical Infrastructures" in Rome on November 20th. Dr. Gianluca Lipari represented ACS at the workshop and presented the synergies with the SUCCESS project.

Ivelina Stoyanova, Nikolaus Wirtz, Robert Ferdinand, Sebastian Schwarz und Ting Wang successfully presented their research papers at the IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2018 Conference in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The titles of the papers can be found at the link.

​7th eSafeNet Consortium meeting took place in Frankfurt at premises of KaCon.

On Wednesday, 24th of October, ACS joined the inaugural summit of the new Linux Foundation Energy (LFE) group in Edinburgh, UK. Initiated by RTE, the transmission grid operator of France, the group aims at developing Open Source Software for accelerating innovation in automation and control of future energy systems.

Dr. David Raisz was elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior Member.

Prof. Ponci, Dr. Cupelli and Prof. Monti gave a tutorial presentation in cooperation with Dr. T. Strasser from AIT at IEEE IECON 2018. The tutorial covered the challenges in testing and validating modern Cyberphysical Energy Systems. The presentation is now available in IEEE TV.

Abhinav Sadu is invited to speak at the 5th annual IEC 61850 Global conference in Berlin. The conference is attended by prominent TSOs and DSOs of Europe, USA, Asia, Africa and Australia. The topic of the talk is how IEC 61850 could be uused in distribution grid automation and specifically for DER intergration.

The ETIP Smart Networks for Energy Transition (SNET) role is to guide Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) to support Europe’s energy transition. eSafeNet was presented to Working Group 4 (Digitisation of the electricity system and Customer participation) in Brussels.

Nikolaus Wirtz represented ACS in the DEFENDER project meeting in Lecce (Italy), hosted by Engineering Ingegneria Informatica.

Alberto Dognini attended the FISMEP Project meeting, hosted by "Politehnica" University of Bucharest.

On 8 October 2018 Dr. Lankes presented the first results of the Envelope project on the HPC status conference of the Gauß-Allianz in Erlangen.

On 17 October 2018 Dr. Lankes and Dr. Breitbart presented Rust as a secure programming language at the Heise devSec().

Prof. Monti and Dr. Marco Pau represented the SOGNO project at the H2020 Smart Grids and Storage projects clustering workshop, which was held in Brussels. The SOGNO project was actively involved in the working groups on Data Management and on Technologies, Tools and Models for electricity grids.

Prof. Antonello Monti was sworn in on October 1st 2008 as one of the first professors during the rectorship of Ernst Schmachtenberg. As he swore in, he founded the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems. Meanwhile the Institute consists of the two chairs ACS and MOD. We celebrate the ten year anniversary on October 12th 2018.

Anica Frehn and Robert Uhl attended the first German HiL workshop at KIT in Karlsruhe. They presented the real time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop capabilities of the ACS laboratory as well as the Center for Wind Power Drives (CWD).

Prof. Monti, Marco Pau, Jonas Bielemeier and Jan Dinkelbach represented ACS during the SOGNO project meeting in Kilkenny, Ireland. The project was hosted by ESB and the Waterford Institute of Technology.

Abhinav Sadu and Nikolaus Wirtz represented ACS in a workshop in Ljubljana on vulnerability analysis of power and communcation networks with the slowenian TSO ELES.

Alberto Dognini presented FISMEP project at the ERA-Net SES Family of Projects Event, from 17th to 19th September, hosted by Fraunhofer IFF in Magdeburg.

In a joint technical workshop, the ERIGrid consortium invited the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS) to OFFIS in Oldenburg. In two sessions, ACS and the ERIGrid project presented their research activities in the area of laboratory interconnections and distributed co-simulation. Prof. Monti gave an introduction to the VILLAS concept, followed by Marija Stevic with applications of distributed real-time co-simulation and Steffen Vogel who presented the tools and architecture of VILLASframework. Advisory board member Prof. Monti, used the chance to provide feedback to the recent progress made in ERIGrid Joint Research Activities 2-4. In conclusion new topics for future collaboration and potential inputs for an ERIGrid-II project have been identified. The journal paper "Peak shaving: a planning alternative to reduce investment costs in distribution systems?" was published by Baptiste Feron in Energy System Springer in open access. The paper can be found at the link.

On July 30th ACS organized the first hackathon of the SUCCESS project. The event was hosted by the Institute for Theoretical Information Technology of RWTH Aachen. During the hackathon students and researchers were invited to test the SUCCESS Security Solution and, specifically, the Data Centric Security solution developed by ERICSSON in the scope of the SUCCESS project.

Prof. Ponci has been elected member of the Administrative committee election ballot 2018 of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society for the term 2019-2022.

Dr. David Raisz represented ACS with a poster and at a roundtable discussion at the statusworkshop of the project ENSURE in Aachen.

The flagship project "National 5G Energy Gub" officially began with the signing of the cooperation agreement on 19th of July. RWTH Aachen University, TU Dresden and the companies Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom now start the first of three phases of the large-scale project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Michael Diekerhof successfully defended his dissertation "Distributed Optimization for the Exploitation of Multi-Energy Flexibility under Uncertainty in City Districts".

Dr. Gianluca Lipari and Manuel Pitz attended the fourth NRG5 plenary project meeting. The meeting was organized in Ipswich by British Telecommunications.

Baptiste Feron successfully defended his dissertation "An optimality assessment methodology for Home Energy Management System approaches based on uncertainty analysis".

The 7th eSafeNet Consortium meeting took place in Mainz on 03.07.2018.

The Gridwatch device, developed by MAC, a company set in Ireland, measuring power quality indexes has been installed in RWTH premises in the context of ADMS project. Together with the ALTEA sensors, the locally developed "LOCO" PMU and the GridHound Cloud, the ADMS architecture is fully installed in the RWTH pilot site.

The 2nd SUCCESS open day took place with a public event in Bucharest on 28.06 and a visit to two of the three locations of the Romanian field trial (at Stalpu and Ploesti) on 29.06.

On June 27th Ting Wang, representing ACS, presented a conference paper in the IEEE 9th International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation (PEDG) in Charlotte, USA.

The presentation based on the work in P4 of Flexible Electrical Networks project described the challenges of protection of DAB converter in the MVDC netowrks and proposed a new protection method in the session on “Dual Active Bridge Based Systems”.

Lin Zhu successfully defended her disseration "Modeling, Control and Hardware in the Loop in Medium Voltage DC Shipboard Power System".

On June 19th Dr. Gianluca Lipari, representing ACS, presented three of the flagship projects running at the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems. The work done in the scope of SUCCESS, RESERVE and SOGNO projects was described, highlighting how Smart Energy grids may gain benefits from 5G, during the special session on “Unlocking the 5G potential for smart energy grids”, organized by the NRG5 project, at the EuCNC 2018 conference in Ljubljana.

Dr. Gianluca Lipari and Padraic McKeever represented ACS in the SUCCESS Project meeting in Athens, hosted by Synelixis.

Andrea Angioni took part at the periodic meeting of H2020 ADMS project in Bologna, Italy. He discussed the current status of the pilot sites and the actions needed for the last trimester of the project.

The bridge data management working group met in Brussels for its yearly meeting in the beginning of June. Stephan Gross participated and represented the ELSA project and the E.ON ERC.

Professor Monti and Andrea Angioni participated in the Bologna Energy Day event (Italy), as part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week 2018. Prof. Monti presented the last trends in automation in distribution system based on cloud and 5G communication, while Andrea Angioni presented the status of the RWTH monitoring system based on PMUs and cloud. Furthermore Dr. Marco Pau and Jonas Bielemeier represented ACS in the SOGNO Project meeting hosted by University of Bologna and Altea.

The large-scale research project "National 5G Energy Hub" by BMWi began on May 1st. The research is done in cooperation with the TU Dresden and RWTH Aachen University, as well as several industry partners. ACS is also involved in this project.

Dr. Lankes carries out a workshop at the conference IPDPS about runtime and operating systems.

Michael Diekerhof attended the Knowledge Community Meeting in Malmö in the scope of the ERA-Net FISMEP project. The event took place from 22nd to 24th May.

On May 17th Prof. Monti led the workshop on “Cyber-Security for Utility Packet Telecom Networks” during the UtiliNet 2018 conference in Bruxelles. Dr. Lipari presented the security, resilience and survivability by design concepts developed at ACS in the scope of the SUCCESS project.

Dr. Lankes will join the face-to-face-meeting of the program comitee of the supercomputing conference SC18.

Michael Diekerhof attended the FIWARE Global summit in Porto and gave a Keynote on "Definition of a Global Architecture for Smart Grid Applications". The event took place on 8th and 9th May.

Prof. Monti, Alberto Dognini and Malileh Haghgoo attended the FISMEP Project meeting in Gothenburg, hosted by Chalmers University of Technology.

Dr. Marco Pau received from Elsevier the award as outstanding reviewer in 2017 for his work as reviewer of the International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems.

Dr. Marco Pau was nominated by the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society as one of the outstanding reviewers in 2017 for his work as reviewer of the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement journal.

Asimenia Korompili from ACS won the best poster award at ACDGS.

On 19th of April, the In2Rail final event was held in Vienna. In the final conference three workshops with the topics of "Smart Infrastructure", "Intelligent Mobility Management" and "Rail Power Supply & Energy Management" were presented. 

On April 19th, the SUCCESS project opened the doors of the field trial site in Terni, Italy, displaying the solutions developed for protecting Critical Infrastructures from cyber-threats. A low-cost Phasor Measurement Unit which is being developed by ACS has been delivered to the field trial sites in Terni and Romania. At the same time in Terni, the second Project Advisory Board meeting was hosted, where the project team got feedback on its work so far and advice on how to improve for the rest of the project. The SUCCESS security solution works at several different levels: It introduces a new Smart Meter with enhanced security funcitons New security functionality is being developed at the edge of the 5G mobile communications network to detect and mitigate tampering with communications. A Security Operations Centre is being developed which can detect and mitigate cyber-attacks on a critical infrastructure. A Europe-wide information sharing and security analytics network is proposed to allow the infrastructure operators and authorities to share information and benefit from others' knowledge. ACS, represented by Dr. Gianluca Lipari, Padraic McKeever and Igor Sowa, presented the contributions given to the project and demonstrated some of the techniques developed for the cybersecurity of Critical Energy Infrastructures.

The ACS Institute, in the framework of the H2020 projects ADMS, terminated the installation of a total of 4 Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) which are measuring the voltage, current and frequency of the E.ON ERC electrical network. The data are provided to a state estimation algorithm which provides the best estimate of the current status of the grid.

Malileh Haghgoo and Marija Stevic joined the plenary meeting of the H2020 DEFENDER project on 16 and 17 of April, hosted by Engineering in Rome, Italy.

Prof. Monti, Markus Mirz and Sriram Gurumurthy joined the General Meeting of the H2020 RESERVE project in Torino hosted by Politecnico di Torino.

Dr. Lankes visited the Systems Software Research Group at Virginia Tech in March, to strenghten the collaboration in the development of the Unikernel HermitCore.

IEEE released a publication that is collecting the most influential papers in the area of Smart Grids that have been produced in the last 10 years. ACS made it to the list with the paper: “Trade-offs in PMU deployment for state estimation in active distribution grids”.

The E.ON Innovation Days 2018 took place from 22-23 March 2018 in Essen. Prof. Monti gave a presentation describing future scenarios for Distribution Grid Automation.

The sixth meeting of the eSafeNet Consortium took place at the premises of QSC in Cologne. 

The ACS Institute hosted the second meeting of the European project SOGNO. Prof. Monti, Dr. Marco Pau, Jonas Bielemeier and Gaurav Roy attended the meeting for ACS. Next meeting will be in June in Bologna, Italy.

Dr. Marco Pau represented ACS at the final review meeting for the European Project Flexmeter. ACS had a key role in the project, by designing the real-time simulation platform used to test most of the use cases and by developing several algorithms as DSO services. The RESERVE Advisory Board meeting in Brussels was attended by Professor Monti, Markus Mirz, Marco Cupelli, Sriram Gurumurthy and Aysar Musa.

The Special Session proposals on "DC Shipboard Power Systems for the future All Electric Ships" and "Smart Automation, Control and ICT Concepts applied to Power and Energy Systems" by Macro Cupelli were accepted for IECON 2018.

The kick-off meeting of the H2020 project SOGNO was held in Aachen. Prof. Monti, Marco Pau, Gaurav Roy, Jonas Bielemeier and Manyun Huang represented ACS at the meeting. The project deals with the use of 5G communication and cloud services for the automation of future distribution grids. ACS has the role of technical manager for the project.

At the ENSURE CLUSTER 3-Meeting in Oldenburg ACS was represented by Stefan Dähling (who leads the „Co-simulation" working group 3.1.2), Igor Sowa (contributes to AP.3.2 with collaborative optimization strategies in an aggregator), Lukas Razik (working in AP.3.1 „ICT related solutions") and David Raisz (responsible for milestone M3.2.1 „Concepts of System Operation and Automation" and contributing to AP 3.4 „Stability aspects"). Our results and plans for future works were appreciated by our partners.

On December 15th at 16:00 the information event for third semester students of the faculty for electrical engineering and information technology takes place in the seminar room 00.24. This information event helps to decide on a specialization.

On December 8th, the Day of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology takes place. There, Dr.-Ing. Mohsen Ferdowsi (Alumni of ACS) is awarded with the STAWAG Disserations Prize 2017. Further information is published at the link.

At the beginning of January, in the context of the ADMS H2020 EU project, we will start to install and test six Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) developed during 2017 by ACS Institute. The PMU will be connected to the Medium Voltage current and voltage sensors developed by ALTEA company and will continuously send measurements to a cloud monitoring system developed by GridHound.

The EU project "FISMEP - FIWARE for Smart Energy Platform" has started. It draws on the results of the EU project FINESCE and will further advance its platform concept by designing and adding new services to increase the flexibility of energy systems. Under the coordination of RWTH Aachen University, a total of seven research an industrial partners from Germany, Sweden and Romania are jointly working on the project. The Field Test Germany will be led by the ACS, in close collaboration with Flexible Electrical Networks FEN Research Campus. Further information is published at the link.

Stephan Groß and Maliheh Haghgoo participated at FIWARE Tech Summit 2017 which was held in Málaga on the 28th and 29th of November. It is an event specifically dedicated to technological and business development and gathering leading developers, startups, corporates and entrepreneurs from the worlds of Open Source, Smart Cities, Smart Industry, Smart Agrifood, and Internet of Things, to share experiences, discover new business opportunities, and to co-create the future. Workshop Protection Concepts LVDC will be held at 10 o'clock on 27. November in the office of Forschungscampus FEN, Aachen. Wilbert Tarnate and Ting Wang from ACS will present about the topic LVDC protection.

The INTERFLEX project represented by Marco Cupelli participated in the H2020 Bridge Data Management Working Group meeting in Brussels. The group worked on the topic characterization of flexibility services and data handling restrictions.

There is a lot of interest and activity in the area of using distributed renewable energy sources to support recovery from blackouts and island operation of microgrids. The event "Stromausfall - Versorgungssicherheit im Inselnetzbetrieb mit dezentraler Einspeisung" (Power Failure - Security of supply in stand-alone grid operation with decentralized feed-in) organised by Bayern Innovativ was attended by ACS. The IEEE SmartGridComm takes place in Dresden from October 23 to October 26 2017. On October 24, Padraic Mckeever, Edoardo De Din, Abhinav Sadu and Antonello Monti from ACS present the paper: "MAS for Automated Black Start of Multi-Microgrids". It relates to two research projects at ACS. It describes the general approach taken in the ACS field trial, as well as first results showing simultaneous reconnection of several inverters to a de-energised grid, where the inverters simultaneously perform operater in grid forming mode to re-energise the microgrid and feed the loads. The 5th eSafeNet Consortium Meeting was hosted at ACS on October 17th. eSafeNet is studying dedicated communications for Smart Grids. ACS demonstrated the current state of the work being carried out for recovery from blackout using novel inverter control and a multi-agent system to add intelligence.

The next SUCCESS consortium meeting will take place in Cork, Ireland, on 12th-13th October. The hosts will be the ESB, the Irish electrical utility operator.

The 4th consortium meeting of RESERVE will be hosted in Cork, Ireland on the 10th and 11th October 2017. ACS will be represented by Marco Cupelli, Markus Mirz, Sriram Gurumurthy, Aysar Musa and Antonello Monti.

ACS, represented by Nikolaus Wirtz attended the DEFENDER plenary meeting in Terni, hosted by ASM Terni S.p.A.

Researchers link ten simulators for a transatlantic realtime simulation. The demo took place in the Idaho National Lab, USA on 29.09.2017. Steffen Vogel from ACS visited the demo and Prof. Antonello Monti headed a related live-workshop at ISGT.

Dr. Marco Pau received the RWTH Start-Up grant for the project "SMART PLUS - SMART PLacement of MeasUrementS in distribution grids"; the grant funds post-docs and Junior professors for the development of innovative research projects and is aimed to support their scientific independency.

Lukas Razik participated at the D-A-CH+ Energieinformatik 2017 Conference (October 5-6 2017) in Lugano, Switzerland and presented the paper: Automated deserializer generation from CIM ontologies: CIM++—an easy-to-use and automated adaptable open-source library for object deserialization in C++ from documents based on user-specified UML models following the Common Information Model (CIM) standards for the energy sector

SUCCESS will have a booth at the European Utility Week in Amsterdam, 3rd-5th October.

On the days 27-28 September, Prof. Monti, Prof. Ponci and other ACS research assistants participated to the meeting of the H2020 project ADMS. During this meeting some demontrations on the use of low cost PMU and cloud based monitoring system were held.

At ISGT Europe 2017 Conference in Torino, Italy, three ACS papers were presented: Sonja Kolen presented the publication "Swarm Behavior for Distribution Grid Control", Aysar Musa presented the publication "Modeling and Design of Hybrid Distribution Network: Operational and Technical Features", and the student Erdem Gümrükcü presented the publication "Modular Modeling Concept and Multi-Domain Simulation for Smart Cities".

Flexmeter activities were presented in Turin during the IEEE Internation Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT Europe). Marco Pau represented ACS at the Workshop.

ACS, represented by Gianluca Lipari and Manuel Pitz, attended the second NRG5 project meeting in Athens, hosted by TEISTE - Technological Education Institute of Sterea Ellada.

Baptiste Feron and Hassan Harb attended the final colloquium for photovolotaics in Berlin, in the frame of the Project PV CHP.

On the days 20-22 September, Andrea Angioni from ACS participated to the IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems. He presented a paper on a “Low Cost PMU to monitor distribution grids”. The workshop was a good opportunity for idea exchange and updates in the world of electrical measurements.

After a second on-site check with the project partner Bouygues, 5 of 6 batteries at the Aachen trial site are operational and are tested in order to provide flexibility to the office building district at the EON ERC.

E.ON ERC hosted the Cluster 3 joint meeting from 26 to 27 July. Shortly before this, ACS hosted two preliminary workshops (for contributors in work packages 3.1 and 3.4 respectively). ACS was represented by Stefan Dähling, David Raisz and Igor Sowa.

ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) launched a new group on Context Information Management for smart city interoperability. The ACS (Stephan Gross) joined the first workshop on Cross-Cutting Context Information Management in Berlin.

Several Work packages of the H2020 project DEFENDER met in Ljubljana for concrete elaboration of research activities across partners. A visit at ELES (one of the pilot site owners) regional control room and substation facilities supported the discussions. For ACS, Nikolaus Wirtz and Bettina Schäfer were participating.

On July 5th, industrial and academic partners participated in the first medium voltage consortium Workshop to discuss the results of the work achieved and define future directions for cooperation in research and development activities both industry and university.

7th LV steering committee meeting was hold in FEN office, Aachen. ACS (Ting, Wang) presented the research progress in the field of influencing factors of LVDC protection.

The 7th Steering Committee Meeting of FEN Low Voltage took place on RWTH Campus. Current developments and roadmap proposal were presented, engaging the industry consortium in the roadmap development.

On the 30th of June 2017 Mohsen Ferdowsi doctorated at ACS with the dissertation "Data-Driven Approaches for Monitoring of Distribution Grids".

The 5G-PPP phase 2 project NRG-5 held the kick-off meeting in Rome. Gianluca Lipari participated for ACS. The NRG-5 project aims to contribute to the 5G PPP/5G Initiative research and development activities, by delivering a novel 5G-PPP compliant, decentralized, secure and resilient framework, with highly availability, able to homogeneously model and virtualize multi-homed, static or moving, hardware constrained (smart energy) devices, edge computing resources and elastic virtualized services over communications’ and energy utilities’ infrastructures.

ACS, represented by Prof. Monti, Gianluca Lipari and Padraic McKeever, joined the SUCCESS project meeting and first Advisory Board meeting in Stockholm, hosted by KTH - Royale Institute of Technology.

Professor Antonello Monti was awarded the "IEEE Innovation in Societal Infrastructure Award 2017". Further information is published at the link.

ACS hosted the first review of the SUCCESS project. Prof. Monti, as technical manager, Gianluca Lipari and Padraic McKeever represented ACS, presenting the results of the project obtained so far and demonstrating the SUCCESS Security Monitoring Architecture and the developed security and resiliency solutions in the ACS laboratory.

Professor Antonello Monti is one of seven RWTH managers who were awarded "FAMOS für Familie" for their family-friendly management. On prize-giving he was represented by Sara Khayyamim.

ACS at the Fraunhofer IoT Innovation and Networking Days in Bonn. ACS, represented by Gianluca Lipari, joined the Fraunhofer IoT Innovation and Networking Days, presented the vision and the first results of the H2020 Project SUCCESS.

The H2020 project DEFENDER held the kick-off meeting in Rome. Bettina Schäfer participated for ACS. DEFENDER (Defining the European Energy Infrastructures) is aiming at protection and security of critical energy infrastructures.

Stephan Gross participated for ACS in a meeting of the Smart Grid Plus ERA-Net initiative. The goal of the meeting was to establish a collaboration between Funding Programs, Providers of Data and Service Platform hosts.

Anica Berthold participates at the 4th International Workshop on Grid Simulator Testing of Wind Turbine Drivetrains at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado USA.

Marco Pau presented the paper "Optimal scheduling of Heat Pumps for Power Peak Shaving and Customer Thermal Comfort" at the SMARTGREENS conference in Porto, Portugal. The paper was awarded as best paper of the conference.

The Horizon 2020 project ADMS for which Prof. Monti acts as Project Coordinator was kicked off in with all partners in a meeting at ACS. Further participants from ACS were Prof. Ponci, Bettina Schäfer and Andrea Angioni.

Lisette Cupelli, Robert Uhl, Marija Stevic and Marco Cupelli attended IECON 2016 (http://www.iecon2016.org) conference in Florence, Italy. Our institute presented four papers. Marija Stevic presented the paper “Virtual integration of laboratories over long distance for real-time co-simulation of power systems”. Robert Uhl presented two papers: The first paper is titled „Nodal-Reduced Modeling of Single-Phase Dual-Active Bridge Converters for EMTP-type Simulations“ and is about an efficient approach for modeling Dual-Active Bridge DC/DC-converters in transient system-level simulations. The second paper is titled „Non-linear Behavioral X-Parameters Model of Single-phase Rectifier in the Frequency Domain“ and is about applying the X-Parameters modeling approach in power electronics driven power systems. X-Parameters is a non-linear behavioral modeling approach, until now only used in microwave engineering, for steady-state simulations in the frequency domain, taking the generation of harmonics into account. Lisette Cupelli received the award for the best presentation on her paper “Ancillary services from data center HVAC systems and back-up generator sets” at the Special Session "Efficiency of Large Data Centers".

The Horizon 2020 project RESERVE for which Prof. Monti acts as Technical Manager was kicked off in a meeting at the coordinator Ericsson in Herzogenrath. Further participants from ACS were Bettina Schäfer, Antonino Riccobono and Markus Mirz.

Eyke Liegmann, a former master student of ACS, who was supervised by Dr. Antonino Riccobono, presented the paper "Wideband Identification of Impedance to improve Accuracy and Stability of Power-Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulations"

On 27 September 2016, a workshop of the IEEE PES Germany Section on the topic " Distribution networks for the Energy Transition - network structures, grid benefits, balancing capability" took place at the TU Kaiserslautern. Experts from industry, grid operators and science discussed on how the network structures that have been developed over decades are still sustainable in a more decentralized generation environment. Presentations in various topic blocks, such as grid expansion requirements in the distribution grid, system services and network black start capability, as well as further development of system structures, accompanied the discussions. Tim Schlösser from the institute ACS participated in this workshop to discuss with researchers and representatives of network operators the challenges of the Energy Transition in distribution grids in order to identify solutions from different perspectives and further research requirements.

The 1st H2020 SUCCESS Innovation Event took place in Terni, Italy on 22 September.

The Conference "Zukunftsfähige Stromnetze" 2016 by BMBF and BMWi in cooperation with the lead partner Projektträger Jülich took place in Berlin. There have been several panel discussions with representatives from economy, politics, and science as well as a poster session and presentations of 82 research projects like SINERGIEN, SWARMGRID, etc. in which ACS is involved. All projects are supported by the BMBF / BMWi "Förderinitiative Zukunftsfähige Stromnetze" with over 140 million euros. From ACS Marco Cupelli and Lukas Razik attended the Conference.

The 2nd H2020 SUCCESS Project Meeting took place in Terni, Italy on 20-21 September.

The half project review of FLEXMETER has been successfully held in Brussels on September 20th. ACS has a main role in the project for the off-line testing of the project solutions and presented a demo on Demand Response and a software tool aimed at the random generation of residential load profiles.

19./20. May 2016 – Kick-off Meeting EU Horizon 2020 project SUCCESS (Securing Critical Energy Infrastructures). Prof. Monti as Technical Manager of the project joins the Kick-Off Meeting with his team.

The participants of IDE4L project meet in the offices of Unareti distribution System Operator in Brescia, Italy, to discuss the demonstration phase and to discuss the status of the project with the EU officer. On 4-5 June 2020, Nikolaus Wirtz, Hendrik Flamme, Chijioke Eze and Ömer Sen (IAEW) presented the progress on the assessment and analysis of risk prevention strategies and the situation awareness and incident mitigation modules to the PHOENIX consortium during an online plenary meeting. Beyond that, it was great to hear Nelly Leligou of University of West Attica presenting education for the energy transition according to project ASSET.

At the second energy research dialogue, representatives of research institutions and companies from North Rhine-Westphalia discussed the future of energy research in the rhine area with minister Pinkwart. Maliheh Haghgoo and Alberto Dognini represented ACS in the FISMEP project meeting in Malmö (Sweden), hosted by E.ON Sweden.

Prof. Monti, Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran initiated the work on forecasting by the means of machine learning for the demo site in Malmö together with the host and project partner E.ON.

A 5-day course has been held at EON.ERC addressing the main challenges when it comes to building future power networks with a high share of renewable energy sources and presenting the solutions developed within the European projects RESERVE - Renewables in a Stable Electric Grid- and SOGNO-Cost-Effective Automation Services to Enable Smart Distribution Grids. These challenges include issues such as frequency and voltage control, power system monitoring, cyber security and ICT aspects as well as the need for a set of new network codes and ancillary services. The course was divided into two parts: during the first two days focus sed on the challenges of the future power network that have to be faced by the industry and ICT professionals, while in the last three days the related technical insight were analysed more in detail, giving especially the doctoral students the possibility to deepen their knowledge by participating in workshops for all the linked topics.
