Frequency Dynamics in Low-Inertia Power Grids

 

"Frequency Dynamics in Low-Inertia Power Grids" is a DFG funded research project with the goal of establishing collaborative scientific relationship with partners abroad. Within the framework of this project, Dr. Laith Shalalfeh, of the German Jordanian University in Amman (Jordan) and the researchers at ACS aim to apply advanced data analytics on PMU data to understand the frequency dynamics in power grids with different penetration levels of renewables.

 

Toward more green energy, an increasing penetration levels of renewables are integrated into the power grid. The converter-interfaced generation reduces the overall inertia of the grid and makes the grid more susceptible to larger frequency deviations and higher rate of change of frequency (RoCoF). In this collaborative project, using the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA), we intend to evaluate the statistical and fractal characteristics of real-world frequency measurements collected via Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). Moreover, we plan to utilize this information to provide a novel measure of the system inertia and the maximum rate of renewable energy penetration.
