Junior Research Group: “Design and Verification of Control & Protection in DC Systems”

This junior research group explores integrated design and verification methods for DC systems. The developed methods address the complexity of a quickly changing electricity grid and its involved software. This research happens on the border between power systems and power electronics and aims for a better understanding between these two domains. In particular, the aim is to reduce planning and commissioning time and - through optimization - reduce cost. A particular emphasis is put on digital solutions based on artificial intelligence, graph theory, and open-source software.

The junior research group is embedded into the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS) at the E.ON Energy Research Center and is partly funded by the RWTH Junior Principal Investigator (JPI) Fellowship.

The members of this junior research group are involved in standardization activities of CIGRE, and an academic network exploring partially open-source software for HVDC systems (with KIT Karlsruhe, KTH Stockholm, UPC, KU Leuven, TU Braunschweig). The group members are furthermore involved in the ACS-projects READY4DC, HYPERRIDE, and HVDC-Wise.

Dr. Ilka Jahn, as one of seven New Generation Network members, has received the "NGN Award 2022" for outstanding contributions of young members to CIGRE activities. Dr. Jahn is secretary of CIGRE working group B4.85 (Interoperability in HVDC systems based on partially open-source software). To the right Michel Augonnet, CIGRE President.
