Open DEI

Aligning Reference Architectures, Open Platforms and Large Scale Pilots in Digitising European Industry

Open DEI Logo

The Digital Transformation strategy of the European Union has, among others, a particular priority: the creation of common data platforms based on a unified architecture and an established standard. Manufacturing, agriculture, energy and healthcare represent key fields for the deployment of the EU strategy for digitalisation.

More Information

The OPEN DEI proposal aims at leveraging synergies, identifying gaps, sharing best practices, reinforcing regional/national relationships as well as putting in place the necessary joint measures to implement common dissemination, communication, training and exploitation action plans among the Innovation Actions implementing the EU DT strategy. OPEN DEI is structured around twelve coordinated and complementary objectives grouped in four main action lines:

  • Platform Building: Comparing reference architectures and open source reference implementations, enabling a unified industrial data platform.
  • Large Scale Piloting: Contributing to a digital maturity model, creating a set of assessment methods and a migration journey benchmarking tool.
  • Data Ecosystem Building: Enabling an innovation and collaboration platform, forging a European network of Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs), contributing to industrial skills catalogue and observatory.
  • Standardisation: Conducting cross-domain surveys, performing promotion and implementation, building alliances with existing EU and standard developing organizations.

The Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS) will concentrate its work in the Energy domain.

With respect to the Large Scale Pilots Observatory, awareness will be created about the piloting activities of the Platform projects, to identify synergies and when possible standardize the way of doing things and to measure the global indicators (KPI) of the initiative going beyond individual platform projects. This activity will also look at applying lessons learned from previous and ongoing programs and initiatives (for instance Big Data and IoT Large Scale Pilots) and at deriving new best practices from the new projects.

In the OPEN-DEI Ecosystem, ACS aims at enabling cross-domain collaboration among the DIHs of the reference Innovation Actions (IAs): designing a collaboration strategy, fostering the development of effective partnerships among the DIH, organizing and holding common event, collecting and sharing best practices in managing, service provision and sustainability. Additionally, it will create and deploy new services and design a catalogue of industrial skills, for the digital transformation in EU industry.

With respect to Standardisation activity, the existing standards and ongoing activities will be surveyed taking into particular consideration the relevance and impact of such standards for the ICT sector in the energy domain. Moreover, recommendations for future projects which intend to heavily participate in standardisation efforts will be analyzed and developed.
