I-NERGY is an H2020 European Project, which aims at delivering an energy-specific open modular framework for supporting AI-on-Demand in the energy sector (AI4 Energy), by capitalising on state-of-the-art AI, as well as IoT, semantics and data analytics technologies. I-NERGY will enable AI-based cross-sector multistakeholder analytic tools for integrated and optimised smart energy management, based on seamless data-information-knowledge exchange under respective sovereignty and regulatory principles.

I-NERGY is a three-year project which started in January 2021 aimed at evolving, scaling up and demonstrating innovative AI-as-a-Service (AIaaS) Energy Analytics Applications, which will significantly contribute to achieve a techno-economic optimal management of the electrical power and energy systems value chain, especially for SMEs and non-tech industries, while leveraging on and complementing the AI resources and tools made available by the AI4EU platform.
The technical solution follows the I-NERGY Conceptual Architecture and it consists of four main pillars:
- ‘I-NERGY Data Services’, encompassing modules related to interoperable data collection;
- ‘I-NERGY AI Trained Models’, including federated privacy preserving machine learning, cross-stakeholder transfer learning and adaptive self-learning;
- ‘I-NERGY Application Layer’, providing a set of AI-powered analytics tools as a service [AIaaS / PaaS (Platform as a Service) / IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) models];
- ‘I-NERGY - AI4EU Interconnection Layer’, including open APIs for making available I-NERGY technology enablers to the AI4EU community.
Other Contact Persons
Support for SMEs is also one of the big pillars of the project in pursuing the goal of expanding the ecosystem of AI4EU, by the means of two Open Calls that will distribute 2m EUR in total to up to 25 disruptive projects that will participate in the Technology Transfer Programmes. The programme consists on funding to improve the maturity of products and services and a technical support from the parties involved in I-NERGY. This will foster cooperation and help to create a vibrant and active community that will boost the value and impact of the ecosystem for their members and involved stakeholders.
Role of RWTH in the Project
RWTH is a key technical partner in the project, in charge of developing and implementing solutions that will have a prominent role in the outcomes of the project. An important feature of the outcomes is the envisioned reusability by the means of open-source-oriented solutions.
In WP3, RWTH participates leading T3.3 that involves the exploitation, assessment and implementation of a large variety of technologies, algorithms and optimisation techniques (e.g. including and extending the AI4EU package tools for ML, etc.), with the aim of efficiently enabling the training of complex models and the solving of computationally intensive problems.
In WP4, RWTH participates leading T4.3 models the integration of individual RES generation components into Distributed Energy Resources, like Microgrids, and construct system level digital twins. This setup will support the evaluation of the system level scenarios and in particular the interaction with the grid. This integration will be based on the application of the open-source simulation tool DPsim developed at RWTH.
H2020 project I-NERGY released an open call. The open call addresses SMEs and startups developing artificial intelligence algorithms and services applicable to the energy sector. Applicants can receive 50.000€ of funding under this programme.
The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation under grant agreement no 101016508.
