Quirinus

 

QUIRINUS-Control is a project funded by the BMWK as part of the coal phase-out to assess voltage quality in an electric power system increasingly dominated by distributed generation. The consortium is composed of 18 project partners, including scientific institutions, manufacturers and grid operators.

 

The objective of the QUIRINUS-Control project is to objectively evaluate the voltage quality in the time range < 3 minutes for the electrical distribution network and customer installations. For this evaluation, a real-time capable Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) will be designed and realized as a tool within the project. For this purpose, a distributed measurement system will be set up in the Rhenish coalfield region “Rheinisches Revier” to measure possible changes in voltage quality as a result of the move away from conventional power generation and the increased integration of converter-based plants, to analyze them with the help of AI and to visualize them in the WAMS. Part of this are a secure information and communication infrastructure as well as secure operational processes. At the same time, a suitable legal regulatory framework for the implementation of the WAMS will be identified. Finally, a business model analysis will show the way towards a sustainable operation of the developed approaches, taking into account existing and new actors in the energy system.

Further objectives of this project are:

  • Visualization & objectification of the opportunities and challenges in the transformation of the regional electricity supply system. Of particular value is the planned scientific support by renowned scientific partners such as RWTH Aachen University.
  • Job/market relevance and thus structural effectiveness: The Rhenish mining region is positioning itself as the "energy district of the future" on a supraregional scale, also in terms of supply reliability, because technical solution modules are being developed for real problems that arise and these are being evaluated in terms of their effectiveness and efficiency. A symbiosis of scientific institutions, manufacturers, network operators and other partners can thus be established in the Rhenish mining region for the increasingly emerging market for regional energy security solutions.
  • Stimulus for the restructuring of the regional electricity supply system: The contribution of QUIRINUS-Control also lies in the fact that the establishment and management of a representative long-term measurement of voltage quality, together with scientifically supported data evaluation, should provide important stimuli for the further restructuring of the regional electricity supply system from a technical and technological, (national) economic and social point of view.
  • Improvement of transparency and networking: Via QUIRINUS-Control, the stakeholders authorized for this purpose are given access to information relevant for decision-making and action in each case with the tool of the monitoring system, which also favors increased networking and interaction among each other.

Along with IAEW, ACS is one of the two participating institutes of RWTH Aachen University and is mainly responsible for the conceptualization of an information security management system in the project, taking into account the current and future legal and regulatory framework and the principle of "security by design".
