TARGET-X
Trial Platform for 5G Evolution – Cross-Industry on Large Scale (TARGET-X) is a research project funded by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) under Horizon Europe. The project aims to expedite the digital transformation of four key verticals: energy, construction, automotive, and manufacturing by using large-scale trials in multiple testbeds with 5G/6G communication technologies. The project started on January 1st, 2023 and runs until June 30th, 2025.

Introduction:
The TARGET-X project's main objective is to validate industrial 5G/6G features and architectures in large-scale pilots. Through practical demonstrations, validation, and assessment of the capabilities of 5G/6G using large-scale trials in multiple testbeds, TARGET-X will test and evaluate technologies like real-time communication, localization, self-description, digital twinning, and sensor-network data fusion. In order to accomplish these objectives of the project, different use cases for several industries within the existing testbeds will be created. Novel features of 5G/6G technology will be developed and integrated into these testbeds, ensuring their thorough examination and approval in advanced scenarios. The project will validate 5G/6G technologies in a user context on a large scale from an end-to-end perspective, including a sustainable value chain of devices, connectivity, and service delivery while considering cyber security. The end results of TARGET-X will be shared and discussed with the 6G-SNS projects, and they will also be further used to standardize across different industries.
Test Beds:
TARGET-X established five testbeds for trial sites located at the 5G-Industry Campus Europe in Aachen and the Idiada Automotive Testbed near Barcelona. Testbed for Manufacturing, Robotics, Construction, and Energy trial sites are located at the 5G-Industry Campus Europe in Aachen. While Testbed for the Automotive trial site is located at Idiada Automotive.
ACS Role:
ACS is involved in most of the project's Work Packages (WP). But the major work is related to energy, thus leading the Energy WP. The main goal of the energy testbed is to enhance energy awareness and monitoring through the utilization of a private 5G network within the Industry Campus Europe. ACS will deploy devices for voltage and current measurement at the E. ON ERC’s main building and other points of the 5G Industry Campus Europe. The communication infrastructure will utilize the local 5G network, test its capabilities, and provide novel use cases for 5G-driven measurement devices. This will increase energy awareness among the partner verticals and provide new insights into the local power grid. The use cases for the energy testbed will be about 5G for energy awareness, 5G for monitoring and increasing sustainability.
Overall, the main features of the Energy testbed are:
- Deploying multiple measurement devices throughout the 5G-Industry Campus Europe in Aachen
- Cloud-based data analytics and visualization
- Real-time simulator-driven test environment
- Distributed monitoring solutions
