The energetic optimization of cities offers great potential for reducing energy consumption, in particular through the use of decentralized energy systems and networks. However, uncertainties such as price development or production from renewable energies are problematic in the optimized planning of energy systems. The SUSTAIN project is therefore aimed at a robust design of energy systems at neighborhood level in order to reduce the sensitivity to unsafe quantities. In this way, more stable solutions with regard to cost and emission minimization are generated and the risk of incorrect investments is reduced.

In addition to the robust optimization, SUSTAIN is developing a city quartering cloud, which simplifies the networking of various actors in the district and enables services from the cloud. The City Quarter Cloud is designed as an open-source solution to enable flexible use and expansion.

In addition to the Institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate and the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems, the city of Bottrop is an associated partner. The methods for robust optimization developed within the project will be applied to the InnovationCity in Bottrop and the cloud system implemented.

SUSTAIN will demonstrate the process of building a stable power system with distributed generation and an increasing integration of renewable energies in Bottrop, a model city for the InnovationCity Ruhr programme. SUSTAIN’s approach is to define a robust system solution which tolerates deviations from its design parameters without significant loss of efficiency.

The project will include all relevant stakeholders involved in the establishment of a decentralised energy supply. It will construct an open source cloud platform to act as a binding link between all actors.
