European electricity systems have undergone major changes over the last two decades. Distributed renewable energy sources such as wind or solar energy have reached significant shares in the electricity supply sector, while new forms of electricity use, such as the progressive development of electro mobility, have emerged. Various demonstration projects in the InterFlex project are examining how the integration of new technical solutions can lead to local energy optimization. To this end, ways of making the power supply more flexible are being developed and transferred into practical use at local level. 20 industrial partners (energy suppliers, manufacturers of power components, network service providers and research centers) from six different European countries are involved in this project in order to implement smart grid technologies on an industrial scale within the framework of a high penetration of renewable energies.
Within this project, the work of EBC focuses on the use of thermal energy system components to provide flexibility for the electricity grid in order to support the integration of renewable energies. In particular, the storage capacities of thermal networks, in combination with electrically driven heating and cooling systems, offer great potential for providing flexibility for the electricity grid. In addition, the potential of the building sector is also examined by analyzing various options for providing flexibility for individual buildings and groups of buildings.
