Research Campus Project 4: Design, Construction and Testing of Campus FEN Research Grid

In this project, a medium voltage DC research grid is designed and built on the campus of RWTH Aachen University. The grid then connects several laboratories, hosting test benches in the megawatt range. Concepts for the control and stability of multi-terminal DC systems as well as components like DC-DC converters can be tested in the grid in real operating conditions.

The grid layout including distances and electrical parameters. The three grid substations: E.ON Energy Research Center (E.ON ERC), Center for Wind Power rives (CWD) and Center for Ageing, Reliability and Lifetime Prediction for Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems (CARL) are connected in a ring configuration with bipolar voltage levels and a grounded neutral point. This allows flexible power flow control between the substations by DC-DC converters (DAB topology with galvanic isolation and voltage transformation). A SCADA system provides monitoring and control. Grid control is being tested on a distributed HiL simulation (XRS7070).
