Reading up on the Fall Meeting 2020 (September 24-25)

This year, the autumn meeting of the group should take place on September 24 and 25 at the RWTH Aachen University. However, the increasing number of Covid-19 infections at this time did not allow a meeting in the usual form. Therefore the meeting was held in a purely virtual form for the first time. The format allowed easy participation and was very well received, as shown by the pleasingly high number of almost 120 registrations. With an average of 80 participants, all presentations were well attended and were followed by lively discussions. The virtual implementation also enabled a guest lecture from the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in New York.

The program was held under the motto "From secure languages to secure systems". In addition, there was a call for field reports on the digitization of teaching, which is becoming increasingly important in times of pandemic. As a guest speaker Dan Williams from the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center presented his work in the field of container virtualization and unikernels. In particular he presented "Lupine Linux", a Linux in the unikernel garb. The complete program of 14 presentations including summaries and slides can be found at the following URL: https://www.betriebssysteme.org/aktivitaeten/treffen/2020-aachen/programm/

For two contributions there are also papers with further details in the digital library of the Gesellschaft für Informatik.

The scientific presentations were supplemented by a "virtual panel discussion", in which the effects of the pandemic on teaching were discussed. Invited to this event were the Dean of Faculty 1 at BTU Cottbus Professor Jörg Nolte, the Vice Rector for Teaching at RWTH Aachen University Professor Aloys Krieg and PD Dr. Malte Persike from the Center for Teaching and Learning Services at RWTH Aachen University. The animated discussion showed that the topic moved and occupied the participants very much.

Under the unusual circumstances, the event was very successful. The expert group takes note of this and will consider how future meetings can be accompanied digitally.
