CoordiNet - Large-scale demonstrations of innovative network services through demand response, storage and small-scale distributed generation
CoordiNet is a 3.5-year project, started in January 2019, which explores alternative means to facilitate the participation of small-scale energy prosumers into the markets via game-changer technologies, such as IoT, artificial intelligence, big data services, P2P energy trading platforms, blockchain and distributed ledger technologies.
The project pursues the following main objectives:
- Demonstrate the activation and provision of services through a TSO-DSO coordination
- Define and test standard products that provide services to the network operators
- Develop a TSO-DSO-consumer collaboration platform in demonstration areas to pave the way for the interoperable development of a pan-European market
CoordiNet's International Consortium
The project consortium is composed of partners from industry and academia from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden. The extent of the CoordiNet demonstrations allows extrapolating the features of TSO-DSO-market collaboration on a European wide-area. A set of standardized products will be defined and field-tested and the building blocks for a future European platform that will contribute to opening new revenue streams for consumers to provide grid services will be established. Finally, the project will provide a pathway towards a seamless pan-European electricity market with non-discriminatory access to all market participants.

This demonstration project will allow DSOs and TSOs to identify and create dynamic local markets (i.e. the geographical scope of the market will vary according to the network conditions). These markets solve congestions in their networks with market-based mechanisms using EU wide or national standardized products that are at the same time integrated with the existing electricity markets. These local markets can be created and modified by TSOs or DSOs to perform congestion management and voltage control after the day-ahead market, in intra-day or in real-time.
RWTH Aachen University with its institute ACS will contribute to the following research tasks:
- Use case analysis and identification of grid service products as preparation of the demonstration campaigns,
- Development of a prognosis for regional markets using machine learning,
- Simulation-based analysis of scalability potential, and
- Dissemination via scientific publications and conference presentations.
The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation under grant agreement no 824414.
The first demo site within the Swedish CoordiNet demonstration to launch is the site Skåne by EON Energidistribution in Sweden. This demo will have 5 flexibility providers, with a volume of 60 MW, participating in the first demo, from January 2020.
ACS developed the underlying load forecast for the prediction of the grid state.
The algorithm serves already as a basis for the trading actions in the Day-Ahead market.
Gonca Gürses-Tran participated in a workshop on "Needs, challenges and opportunities of TSO-DSO coordination". There she presented the business use cases (IEC 62559-2), identified for the demo sites of the H2020 project, Coordinet. The presenters closed the workshop with a panel discussion.
Prof. Monti, Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran attended the technical meeting on Monday where the consortium defined the next steps to develop further the demonstration campaigns.
On Tuesday, essential results of the first work package have been presented to the advisory board and external stakeholders. Among the other presentations, Gonca summarized the business use cases that have been developed to link harmonized services, products, and market models, with the scope and objectives of the CoordiNet demos.
Dr. Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran joined the meeting for WP1 and WP2 task leaders in Milan. They presented the draft for the finalization of CoordiNet Task 1.5 on business use cases of the demonstration campaigns in Greece, Spain and Sweden.
Prof. Monti, Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran followed up on the work for load forecasting in the Malmö area. The forecasts will be implented on the future TSO-DSO platform for the project demo in Sweden.
Prof. Monti, Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran initiated the work on forecasting by the means of machine learning for the demo site in Malmö together with the host and project partner E.ON.
The 2-day project meeting was hosted by Vattenfall in Stockholm. On the first day, the focus was on the identification of the business use cases (BUCs) based on the IEC 62559 standard. For this, Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran organized an interactive session to share the progress and discuss and develop the current status of the BUCs of the demos in Greece, Spain and Sweden.
Gianluca Lipari and Gonca Gürses-Tran represented ACS during the initial kickoff meeting that was hosted by Endesa. The project consortium consists of in total 23 partners from 10 countries with the overall objective to achieve large scale campaigns to demonstrate how TSO-DSO shall act in a coordinated manner to procure grid services in the most reliable and efficient way.
