Multi-Agent Systems in Office Buildings Evaluation and Development of Current Characteristics

The main aim of this work is to catalogue and to discuss the different characteristics of Multi-Agent-Systems (MAS) in order to easily describe and classify such a system. To give an impression of how they are implemented and how they work, the concept of MAS for buildings is introduced. The distinction into Consumer Agents, Generator Agents and Storage Agents is explained. Each Agent has different goals and possibilities to achieve its goals. Afterwards the required properties for a new innovation to be considered successful are presented.

The next chapter focuses on the comparison and evaluation of MAS characteristics and examines the characteristics and the behavior of the different Agents. The physical communication structure is explained before the pros and cons of the wireless and cable connection are shown on available systems. The manifold types of communication are discussed in the second part of the chapter. Different standards are explained and evaluated. Therefore centralized and decentralized systems and their application possibilities in the building are shown and it is explained how these characteristics play together. The aggregation of the presented characteristics determines whether a MAS is successful or not.

Furthermore, the benefits of MAS are listed in a glossary and the challenges of such systems are explained. The benefits outweigh the challenges and the conclusion is that MAS are a good control solution. Solutions for tackling the challenges are presented. For a summary the benefits and challenges are listed in a glossary.

A further part of the research compares four existing studies on MAS, analyzing these considering the discussed characteristics of MAS. Additionally, the published results of the approaches are discussed, whereas the overall conclusion is that by installing a MAS, less energy is needed to reach higher user satisfaction.

The work closes with an outlook on possible further research topics.
