Energy system optimization for urban districts

This thesis elaborates on the explanation, comparison and application of two energy computer tools, namely EnergyPLAN and COMPOSE. These tools are deterministic input-output-tools that simplify an energy system for the benefit of quick and easy results, namely the operational mode of devices. For instance, energy devices are basically described by capacities and efficiencies and the calculation is based on an hourly time step.

The optimization tools are applied to one energy system that represents an urban district heating network with electricity and heat demands. Corresponding to the topic of distributed generation, the supplying devices of the system are chosen to be a combined heat and power plant, a heat pump and a heat storage. Detailed instructions are given on how to model the defined energy system in each tool. An important part of this thesis is the analysis of the calculation of the models. The technical optimizations of the defined energy system are explained, compared and evaluated regarding their applicability to the defined energy system. Furthermore, the gained information is used to discuss the possible applications for each tool.

Finally, the energy system is analyzed for a time period of one year. One objective is to investigate the potential of the system to balance incoming intermittent electricity and demands. Another objective is to improve the planning of the system regarding the capacities of the devices. Therefore, a quick approach is illustrated on how to improve the capacities of the heat pump and the combined heat and power plant. Here, two improvements are differentiated: firstly, the reduction of capacities due to the implementation of a heat storage and secondly, the change of the shares of the devices regarding their total capacity.
