ERIGrid 2.0
ERIGrid 2.0 expands the research services and tools of the research infrastructure of the ERIGrid-1 project for validating smart energy networks with an electric backbone.
The ERIGrid project has been providing, via the Transnational Access programme, free laboratory access to experts for power system components characterisation and evaluation, smart grid ICT / automation validation, co-simulation, real-time simulation and Power/Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), and others.
ERIGrid 2.0 is committed to the holistic and cyber-physical systems-based validation approach, ERIGrid 2.0 will foster system-level support and education for industrial and academic researchers in power and energy systems research and technology development.

The activities in ERIGrid 2.0 are organized into three areas:
- Facilities for transient power system dynamics and control validation (TA1): Access to facilities allowing a detailed (dynamic) characterisation of power systems and also the possibility of validating complex controller interactions.
- Facilities for large-scale Smart Grid system integration and testing (TA2): Provides an integrated set of facilities offering the analysis of larger systems behaviour in a cyber-physical systems manner. Such a comprehensive analysis and testing capability is usually not possible with a single lab.
- Virtual access to data and services for smart energy systems research (VA): Provides virtual access to databases (metering and phasor data, etc.), simulation services (multi-domain online simulator, etc.) and other relevant tools (CIM editor, etc.) to a broader audience.
A simplified overview of the ERIGrid 2.0 access possibilities is provided in Figure 1. The ambition here is to cover smart grid, smart energy systems, and renewables research topics as mentioned in the previous sections and to integrate them into a European Smart Energy Systems RI. These facilities enable for the first time the thorough testing and evaluation of multi-domain cyber-physical systems.
Furthermore, a platform for Virtual Access with brand new services will be developed in ERIGrid 2.0 based on open source tools for better integration and access provision to external users. The planned platform is based on the following tools (partly from partners) in the architectural in Figure 2:
- DPsim or OpenModellica based Simulation Kernels for JupyterHub,
- VILLASweb/VILLAScontroller for automation and management for scenarios,
- CIMDraw/Pintura for grid modelling,
- OwnCloud/Zenodo as project data repository or for archival, and existing cloud infrastructure based on OpenStack/Docker/Kubernetes for hosting
ACS joined the ERGrid 2.0 consortium after utilizing the Transational Access opportunities of ERIGrid-1 as a user group in two projects.
In ERIGrid 2.0, ACS offers access to two Research Infrastructure (RI) installations:
- RTlab: Our real-time simulation laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art simulators for OPAL-RT, RTDS and National Instruments. This installation is available for transnational access.
- VLab: our virtual access platform for large scale dynamic power system simulations based on our open-source DPsim solver and the the online interactive computing platform Jupyter.
