SUSTAIN - Retrofit and Energy Management in a City Quarter
SUSTAIN will demonstrate the process of building a stable power system with distributed generation and an increasing integration of renewable energies in Bottrop, a model city for the InnovationCity Ruhr programme. SUSTAIN’s approach is to define a robust system solution which tolerates deviations from its design parameters without significant loss of efficiency.
The project will include all relevant stakeholders involved in the establishment of a decentralised energy supply. It will construct an open source cloud platform to act as a binding link between all actors.

Outcome
The project will develop a cloud-based energy management platform which supports both planning and operation for a city quarter:
- robust optimisation of placement of electrical equipment (such as heat pumps, PV) in city quarters
- gathering of live data from the city quarter, data processing and provision of data-as-a-service
- use of this data to perform robust optimal scheduling of the usage of electrical equipment in a virtual city quarter.
The cloud platform will provide a set of services to users such as city planners, building managers and householders.
Partners
In its first Phase (Jan. 2016-Nov. 2017) the ACS and EBC institutes will be the active partners. The conceptual planning will be supported by the associated partner Innovation City Management GmbH (ICM) which represents the City Planning department. Contact with the local energy suppliers Emscher Lippe Energie GmbH und Steag Fernwärme is achieved through the ICM.
The second Phase will be the rollout of the energy management concept in Bottrop.
Sponsor
This project is sponsored by the German: BMWi (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy), Project number 03ET1381A and runs from December 2015 to the end of November 2017.
