Laboratory: Implementation of Automation Functions for Monitoring and Control


The Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS) at the E.ON Energy Research Center offers students an online automation laboratory course entitled "Laboratory: Implementation of Automation Functions for Monitoring and Control". This course module is regularly offered in the summer semester. This course is worth 4 credits (120 hours) and is held in English. The learning objectives, module details, and the course evaluation procedure are explained by Prof. Ponci in the kick-off session. The following concepts are covered in this course:

  • to understand and apply the basics of IEC 61850
  • to configure and integrate Intelligent Electronic Devices for monitoring, distribution and protection functions
  • to validate the IED and substation configuration

Practical Session 1: IEC 61850 for Power System Communication

Objective: to explain and apply the basics of IEC 61850

  • Engineering process using SCL

Practical Session 3: Communication Automation within Substation and IEC 61850 Information Model

Objective: Understanding the logic behind GOOSE message communication

  • Basics of GOOSE messaging and GOOSE message structure

Practical Session 5: Automation Functions in Power System Protection

Objective: Understanding the protection function and communication in protective relay

  • Testing the basic protection function of protective relay

Practical Session 6: Control in Automation

Objective: to understand the role of control systems in the automation of fully converter based power system through a Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) simulation

  • Hierarchical control of DC Microgrids – specifically focusing on the MVDC shipboard power system use case
  • Implementation of automatic generation control (AGC) and virtual impedance droop control for automatizing the DC Microgrid operation
  • Real time monitoring of power system – Data extraction from real-time simulator

Practical Session 7: Automation of MTDC grid

Objective: Application of SCL file for automation of converters in MTDC system

  • The relevant logical node

Practical Session 8: Monitoring States of Power System via PMU

Objective: to introduce PMU as a monitoring device which can provide the high-speed measurements of phasor, frequency and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF)
