The H2020 RESERVE project started in September 2016. In the project we are performing and field-testing newly developed techniques that will enable a stable supply with 100% renewable resources. This ambitious but achievable goal starts with the specification of the required components and functions that future automation systems must have for frequency and voltage control in a system with 100% RES.
Professor Monti of the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS) is the Technical Manager. The ACS researchers are working on Linearized Swing Dynamics, Virtual Output Impedance and Distributed Real Time Simulation.
The novel definition of Linearized Swing Dynamics (LSD) is key to the frequency control architecture which will enable to maintain the system stable under dynamic conditions. Power electronics driven distribution system are prone to voltage instability. To guarantee stability the proposed voltage control architecture will use technologies such as the optimal power flow and the Virtual Output Impedance (VOI) control at inverter level. Those concepts are described in detail in the released deliverables D3.1 and D3.2. The reports are available on the project webpage.
RESERVE organized the special session “Enabling 100% Renewable with new grid codes” during the IEEE ISGT Europe conference in Turin. During this session we presented the inputs for new unified pan-European network connection codes, which were derived from the outcomes of our technical solutions.
To successfully manage energy networks with 100% RES, it is essential that the communications and IT equipment supports the new power grids with fast, reliable, and secure transmission of wide-area field measurements and control commands for managing voltage and frequency in all parts of the network. RESERVE will advance the adoption of 5G technology to showcase an innovative scalable Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system enabling the management of energy networks.
The analysis of Irish and Romanian grid data has shown that these transmission networks exhibit too many nodes to be simulated monolithically on commercially available real time simulators if the dynamics of the network are considered. To tackle this challenge the project develops a geographically distributed real time simulation platform that solves the inherent communication latencies and integrates the heterogeneous simulation and lead to a Pan European Real Time Simulation Environment. For our progress on the real time simulators check out deliverable D4.2, which specifies the functionality of real time solver, and D4.4, which showcases the interconnection tests of the nodes in Pan-European simulation platform.
The final review of the project RESERVE took place in Brussels.
RESERVE developed technical solutions in voltage and frequency control of LV and MV grids to enable up to 100% RES. As well as this, RESERVE made updated and new Network Codes and Ancillary Services. The Network Codes are in the process of standardisation. This event was about bringing the message to political decision makers, based on a set of proposals for citizens' discussion.
The RESERVE Open Day was held at ESB Networks in Dublin, Ireland on 15.05.2019. ESB is running 7 field trials of the voltage control techniques developed in RESERVE to support 100% renewable energy source penetration. Pictures from the Open Day are at the link. It is to be expected that the adoption of new and modified network and grid codes takes longer than the project duration. Moving target. Regulators don't want to implement something that may change in couple of years, so it takes time.
Field trials and economical evaluation are very important. Disseminate through BRIDGE and other ways. Someone must finance the changes proposed. If you say that in 2 years plans will change again, the sponsors will not be happy. So economic evaluation must take this into account. Numbers are needed about the needed capital investment, maintenance upgrade etc.
Even if grid codes are not yet implemented, they have aleady triggered new thinking by regulators and TSOs/DSOs which is a good thing.
Prof. Monti, Markus Mirz and Sriram Gurumurthy joined the General Meeting of the H2020 RESERVE project in Torino hosted by Politecnico di Torino.
The RESERVE Advisory Board meeting in Brussels was attended by Professor Monti, Markus Mirz, Marco Cupelli, Sriram Gurumurthy and Aysar Musa.
The 4th consortium meeting of RESERVE will be hosted in Cork, Ireland on the 10th and 11th October 2017. ACS will be represented by Marco Cupelli, Markus Mirz, Sriram Gurumurthy, Aysar Musa and Antonello Monti.
