FLOW – Flexible energy systems Leveraging the Optimal integration of EVs deployment Wave


FLOW is a four-year project, started in July 2022, aiming to provide highly replicable and user-centric products, concepts and mechanisms for the needs of all actors involved in electric mobility, ranging from power distribution system operators, charging point operators, mobility service providers, infrastructure manufacturers to final users. This project is a joint initiative of 30 European partners, including companies, research organizations and associations from 9 different countries.

The ultimate goal of FLOW consortium is to support upcoming mass penetration of electric vehicles in Europe. Standardization and cross-sector harmonization are essential elements of the targeted outcomes. Therefore, this project will deliver advanced interoperable solutions that enhance planning, operation and assessment, and concepts that optimizes the integration of electric vehicles to energy systems in a wide range of V2X scenarios (vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-building, vehicle-to-grid). To enable seamless participation of the entire value chain, including OEM, technology providers, charging point operators, aggregators, distribution system operators, and transmission system operators, multi-actor orchestration that ensures data exchange and synchronization across actors for V2X and EV flexibility services will be targeted.



To demonstrate and quantify the benefits of the solutions developed in FLOW will be deployed and validated in testbeds (at TRL6) and large demos (at TRL7)

Expected Impact

Role of Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS)

RWTH Aachen University with its institute ACS will develop open solutions to optimize the cooperation between V2X-capable EV charger clusters and lead the task for techno-economic analysis of the project testbeds.

Erdem Gümrükcü participated in the 1st General Assembly of the FLOW project that was co-hosted by the EnelXWay and ARETI in Rome.


A software paper introducing datafev framework has been published in Elsevier Software Impacts. datafev is an open-source Python framework for developing and testing management strategies for electric vehicle  charging. This framework will be used in WP4 of the FLOW project.


Erdem Gümrükcü represented ACS in the kickoff meeting of the FLOW project that was hosted by the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) in Barcelona.
